looking for 6volt starter rebuild kit.

Postby 64/67lo-boy » Wed Feb 06, 2013 5:35 pm

I see you can get the 6 volt positive ground starter brushes and bushings on line for between 9 and 12 dollars. Does any one have a part number for a kit that I could pick up at my local parts store? I think if I ordered it on line id pay more for postage than the parts are worth. I dont have any case dealers close by. Thanks in advance.

NAPA has them or can get them, you would do well to get the springs too, NAPA does not have them
but are on E Bay

Put in new bushings while you are at it. Then it will be good for a few more decades.

Couple of thoughts. Auto parts store for the bushings and brushes. Take in the numbers off your starter's ID plate. Also take in your old brushes. If you want measure up the OD of the bushings and the ID of the shaft.

Some auto parts stores have the bushings and brushes in assortment kits and will match up replacement parts to your measurements or old parts.

Check prices with the local starter/generator rebuilder. May be worth it to have the rebuilder completely work over the starter.
I have an excuse. CRS.

It is less than $20 with shipping, how much will you save after running around looking for the parts that may fit? You will not find the spring I expect.

I bought brushes and bushings off ebay from a guy up Dayton way for about $12.00 delivered. Still have the bushings if somebody wants them...

Pete:

I know that sometimes doing it ourselves is a lot of fun, but when it comes to the Generators and Starters I just take them to my local AC Delco Authorized Service Center. That way I know it is done RIGHT and will last another 60 years. They change the brushes, springs, bearings (replace with sealed ones) do a complete rebuild. I had a bunch of them done - Generator and Cut-Out and the per unit cost was very reasonable. No muss, no fuss and no bother. Guaranteed too :!: :D

I get virtually all my parts from the local auto parts store. Usually less than the advertise price on the internet and I pay no postage or shipping fees. Auto parts store will have the bushings and brushes either on hand or orderable.

Might try your local starter/generator rebuilder. I recently had a shop rebuild the starter for my WD Allis Chalmers. Cost me $36.??. True. I realize that most shops will charge more, perhaps much more. But worth it to have the commutator turned.

This is what I bought. No springs, but I needed brushes in the worst way. Bushings were still fine.

As far as the local starter shop - the one we could afford closed up (retired) and the only one that's left in the area we can't afford.

That's the same seller that Boss referenced above. Same seller, different kit.

That is the same kit I put in mine. My springs were fine. I pressed in the new bushings and turned the commutator on my lathe.

My commutator looked like a potato patch, but it's working just fine. Haven't added lathe to my arsenal yet...

Well I tried the NAPA store and they couldnt find anything. They even called out to the farming comunity of Pung and still got nothing. So I took your advice Boss and got the set off ebay withthe springs. Seems kinda funny that all i could find fom the delco web site was just for autos. Oh well I ll have em next week some time. Thanks again Boss and to all the others that posted their input. All good sugjestions. Thanks
