Rear tires

Was fortunate enough to have a local tire dealer sell us a set of rear tire at cost for our 50 cub 4h resto project . They are imports and appear to be very narrow. They are stamped 8.3x24. Is this the correct size? The old tires were Good Year 8.3x24 but looked wider. Dealer said I could exchange them but what size should I get? Please help....

8.3 x 24 is a good, maybe the "normal" size tire for a Cub these days. Early Cubs had even narrower tires, some people will mount 9.5 x 24's on them, which will fit for most uses. I personally like the 8.3's, no interference with other implements, depth control, etc. and plenty of tire for the horsepower.

I've noticed that the chinese brand tires look physically smaller, even though they are stamped 8.3x24. I actually returned a pair myself, and paid the extra money for Carlisle tires. The Carlisle tires have a straighter sidewall, and definitely look right when mounted.

Honestly, there's probably very little difference, but I didn't like it so I went with the Carlisle tires. If someone's given them to you, I think I'd be greatful and take what you've got.

Thanks for the input. Please keep it coming.

gittractorman, the tires were not given to us. They were sold to us at cost and we are very grateful. Makes no difference to the dealer whether we keep or return them. I Just want to be sure the project turns out nice since the kids have worked so hard......

I found that the cub has too much power for 9.4 tires when working on gravel, even packed gravel. While grading gravel, you'll quickly be hung up if the rear wheels are digging holes. So I installed 11.4 used tires from the front wheels of a big green tractor. Not much thread left, but that's fine on gravel. I notice quite a few cubs have the larger tires.

I have 2 sets of new tires on Cubs. 8.3 x 24 BKT's which look awesome and am happy with the performance and the 9.5 x 24 BF Goodrich's which are huge compared to the BKT's. The BKT I think are made in India but were a good deal at $150 each. The next set will be Trelleborg's 8.3's for Rusty. The 9.5's interfere with the fast hitch leveling control so the PO flipped the tire around which resulted in a ticket from Lt. Bob Perry of the IH correct police.
