Farmall Cub

I am replacing the inner differential seal on my cub. I am not a mechanic so I need advice. I have the final drive and the axle tube off. I need to get the seal out now. Do I need a fancy tool or is there another way? Another question: since I have the final drive off, should I be thinking about putting new seals in there too? Both finals are seeping a little oil, one a little worse than the other but not too bad. Is that quite a job? I do not have a press but do have access to one through work. This is a learning process for me and I do want to learn. Any advice is appreciated.

One of these is real handy for removing seals whne there is no shaft in the way. Around $10 at most auto parts places, and harbor freight. Sorry for the oversized picture, but I was to lazy to copy and resize it.


and where the shaft is in place, such as the final drive, one of these slide hammer dent pullers with the screw end works. You may have to use it in 2 or 3 places around the face of the sela, pulling it a little in each one and moving to the next. Usually available in the $12 to $15 price range.

If you pull the retainers do not forget the O-rings behind them when you reinstall.

You can pry them out with a crow bar , big screwdriver, about anything.

The benefit of pulling the retainers and putting on new Orings is that you also get to clean out the lube feed holes so the seal and bearing get proper lube.

I am have tried to remove the differential seal and it will not budge. I tried to pry it out with a large screw driver but all it does is bend the seal. So I thought I would remove the retainers. Does the oil need to be drained? And it is pretty solid, how can it be removed with out destroying the shims? Or am I getting myself in over my head? Thanks for all the previous advice.

I'd try to keep at pulling the seals out, even if they come out in pieces!

If you do decide to pull the retainers, drain the oil first. Then remove the right side bolts, and with a brass punch, tap the retainer around a bit (1/3 turn). Then gently pry out with a pair of claw hammers or better yet pry bars. With the right side out, then remove the bolts from the left side. Take a block of wood and place against the bearing and with a hammer, drive the left side out (using the rear differential from one side to the other), being careful to drive it squarely and so that it doesn't fly across the room when it lets loose.
With that said, I'd try to get the seals out first!

I just went back out to the garage to work on the seal some more. And with a little determination and a vise grip and out it came! Can an auto parts store cross that seal?

Here is a handy parts cross reference. Don't be confused by the seal. What you took out was a complex rawhide seal with lots of parts. Some in the past only took out some of the parts and could not put the new seal in until they finished the job.
