Farmall Cub

I have a probably very obvious question. I know the throw out bearing on a cub is graphite, but my question is what does the grease do that you put into the fitting? does the grahite turn in the housing, or does the grease penatrate the graphite, or what? I grease mine but never knew really what exactly it does.

Yes

...and this is what a throwout bearing looks like that did not have anywhere near enough grease in it and the wrong grease as well. This was essentially a brand new throwout bearing.




The idea is to fill the cavity around the graphite with grease until it pushes out the overflow hole on the top side of the cast iron shell. You want to use a very inexpensive grease which breaks down easily, i.e. the oil separates from the thickener. The oil is what lubricates the bearing surface which the clutch fingers push against.

I usually have a spare, filled with grease, and coated with grease, marinating, in a plastic bag, until needed. That way, I'm sire its well lubed. Ed

Well i may have a problem then, the PO said they replaced the clutch a year before i baught it. It doesnt appear as if it was ever greased and the face of the graphite feels like it has a concave wore into it. I put new rings in it this summer and did the first oil change on it since, while i was greasing everything i noticed it. I guess that would explain the big change in the tone of the engine when i engage the clutch.

What about his question as to whether or not graphite should turn in the housing? I have 2 spare ones. One turns and the other doesn't.

The actual clutch plate is a separate piece from your clutch release bearing and pressure plate. I am not exactly sure when you say the clutch was replaced, which component you are referencing.

Verify your adjustments are set properly, but from your description it sounds like the bearing will need replacement soon:

I wouldn't necessarily consider that a problem. The more important question is how much the graphite block projects out of the cast holder. If the graphite is approaching flush, the end is near.

Just my opinion, but depending on how much it is "dished" in, I would replace it.

Well the tractor has a 1000 loader on it and the loader frame is in the way and i cant see in the inspection hole. I was just going by feel, ill have to take the cover off and feel again. The way i took it when he said the clutch replaced is that he replaced the pressure plate, disc, throwout bearing and pilot bearing but its been to long ago to recall.
