pto not engaging on cub

I have a 1950 farmall cub i just purchased. The man started the cub right up and engaged the pto . Worked great i came home and cut a little grass just to give it a go. That when my problems started i notice oil dripping on the deck of the mower and was having blowby. Then i went to engage pto. It goes into place but when i release clutch it would go in and then quickly slip out and begin to grind not sure what i should do or where i should start. I would really appreciate any help thanks!

That locks the pto lever in place, so it doesn't jump out of gear. Mounts on the transmission cover bolt. Ed

It does have that bracket i read on another thread that it can move and make it slip out . So i pulled the pto lever back past it and it locked in the only thing is to do this i have to twist the bracket back and it does line up to lock it in far enough back. Thanks for responding!

Not sure what you mean by this. The bracket should be bolted tight to the trans.

Yes it is bolted and has a nub to hold it in place but for some reason it dosent engage the pto untill farther back

Some people slot this holder allowing the small collar inside to set a little deeper in the splines. That works for a temporary fix until you have time to pull the pto shaft out of the back of the trans to see what the real problem is.
With a flash light you can see down thru the oil fill hole on top of the trans to see how all this works inside.

Thanks for all the feedback! Im going to take a look inside i want to fix it right being that i want to cut grass with it. Id hate for it to mess anything further in the middle of grass cutting season.

One other thing to look at is the shaft that the pto lever goes through coming out of the trans. Move the lever back and forth a little and see if you have any play in the lever to shaft hole. My 49 has quite a bit at this connection the hole is worn oval. I don't use the pto much on this Cub, but plan on brazing the hole and drilling it out to fit the lever in the future when I need to put the pto to work.

Are you talking about the bracket with the slots or where the lever is hooked shaft

Or you could end up askin my case with the splines wiped off the main shaft in the transmission. Half a days work later and time spent hunting down the shaft, it's all fixed. Check it out first with the flash light as suggested and look thru the trans filler plug. Check condition of the splines where the coupler slides on. If it's grinding, odds are you are chewing away the teeth on the shaft. Fixing requires splitting the tractor. Not the funnest thing to do on a weekend...., Good luck and keep us posted.

Where the lever goes through the shaft, the shaft has a collar and the lever passes through both and is held in place by a cotter pin.
