Hard to start

My cub starts immediately when it's warm. However, when it's cold, it's ridiculous. Then when it does start, it misses and smokes and spits raw fuel out the exhaust for a few seconds. I'm thinking valve job? Yay or neigh? Any other suggestions? Also, boss, if you read this I apologize for not calling you yet. I've had a hectic couple of weeks. I'll try to give you a ring this weekend.
