Farmall Cub

Yes I did it again. I managed to find the rustiest broken down cub in Florida a purchased it..... Except this one has a backhoe. The data plate is painted over but I think its a 57 that PO says has been in the same area all it's life and he got it 1976. Says he put the backhoe on for his fence business but parked it 6 or 7 years ago and hasn't move it since (we had to dig the tires out). When I got it home I threw a battery on and to my surprise it tried to crank, I sprayed some starter fluid in and got a good POP. This should be a challange

With it sitting that long, be sure to prime the oil pump before you try further to fire it up.

Very interesting lo-boy. Backhoe's on Cubs are rare and to see one that has had the backhoe for over 30 years is pretty cool Sure would like some more pics of the backhoe and it's outriggers.

That looks like an interesting project Kevin. Hope you have plenty of holes that need digging

Looks like sitting in the seat and driving would be interesting.
Not sure what the receiver hitch would be for over the gas tank?????

Just noticed the fast hitch depth lever. Is it a fast hitch backhoe?

Yes it will be interesting to say the least! All of the brackets were whatever the PO had on hand. He told me the only money he spent was on the backhoe itself. I'll try to keep everyone posted on this one.

by your description of trying to start it, it osunds as if you may have a valve stuck open. Not normally to big a challenge. good luck and keep us informed.

That is a CASE D100 backhoe attachment, meant for a skidsteer. Pretty neat.

I would suggest being very careful using it. With that mounting frame extending that far out it has a lot of leverage on the tractor, and castings could be broken pretty easily if you are not careful how you use it.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing John. I do believe if it were me, I'd pull the backhoe attachment off, clean it up as good as possible, and try to sell it off as one unit in hopes of recovering some of my costs. Then put my efforts into restoring the tractor. The Backhoe looks to be fairly clean and unaltered, so it may be as simple as cutting it loose from the tractor and setting it on a pallet with a for sale sign. A quick look on e-bay found that the D-100 was meant to be on the Case trencher or Skid Steer, as Matt indicated, and chances are that someone could be looking for one for their Case equipment. It's got to be WAY too heavy for the Cub and I'd be afraid of breaking stuff (on the tractor).

Yes I was thinking of the weight also. The PO said it added a lot of weight but once the cub is off the ground it worked great. As far as recovery of what I paid if I sold it alone I'd triple what I paid . I like the strange home made stuff so ill get it up and running with the backhoe and see where I go from there. The frame the PO built is pretty beefy. I had to remove the backhoe for transport and we only had to disconnect the lines pull two bolts and two pins.

Ah, so there must be stabilizers up front that lift the tractor off the ground too?

I know I caught glimpses of some sort of weight box in one of the early pics.

My vote, if we're voting, is to keep the backhoe. If only because I desperately WANT a backhoe.

After 5 years on and off I finished my backhoe a few months ago. I weighed the major pieces and it appears to be between 700 to 800 pounds. Does not seem like much but hanging off the back of a cub it will put thousands of pounds on the final drive mounts. They have not cracked but I am waiting to see if they survive. If I sit in the seat and lean forward, all is well, if I lean back, then the front will lift off the ground. That was with the backhoe folded tightly. I now have 200 pounds of weigh hanging from the front so I can steer. With the outriggers down and rear wheel weights, I still have to limit the digging otherwise the bucket stay put and the cub slides backward. However, still easier than digging by hand.

Looks like a power steering pump on the side to power the hydraulics and some semi trailer jacks in the middle to hold some of the downward digging force. Over all looks to be very heavy for a cub but well constructed. Should be useful once you get it working.

I would like to see more photos and more details once you have time. Looks like a great project!
