Cub Middle Buster Question

I'm looking for a middle buster to lay out my garden rows with. Ideally I can find a C16 at a reasonable price, but if I can't I'll put one together to get by with. That being said, I need some info. What width is a C16? If you are running a different middle buster, how wide is the one you run, or how wide of one do you think a cub can handle. Keep in mind I'm not breaking new ground, only laying rows out in soil that is already prepared &the had a disc ran through it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

You need the width of the shovel? What width do you need? Let me know and I can get measurements. They are hard to come by. I looked for years to find one and did in Iowa on the Nebraska border. Might have cost around $350 or so...

or you could get the componets and make something that works off you rear cultivator arms.

You can lay the rows off with the back feet, just put sweeps on them, run the back tire in the furrow left by one of the sweeps, that way your rows will be the same distance apart. simple and you dont have to buy anything.I take it you have a side dresser and a 144 cultivator.

If you like to weld or know of someone that can this is what I did. I took a old sweep that I had, then I cut a round point shovel down the middle, arranged it the way it looked the best and welded to two halves to the sweep. I can now remove a sweep from the shank and bolt this in place. It's crude but didn"t cost anything and works pretty good. I have plenty of broken shovels with the amount of kids I have LOL.

Or you can just get some shovels that will mount to your shanks on the rear cultivators and do as Boss has mentioned.

I also made one using a troy-bilt furrower. It mounts where the front half sweeps would go. I mainly used it to make furrows for potatoes, but I could lay my whole out garden with it. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for the width at the widest point of the wings. The depth from top of plow at the middle to bottom of plow might also be helpful. I don't have a side dresser, but I do have the 144 cultivator in the front, but a full toolbar in the rear. Currently it is suspended by a chain, Louisiana style I am told, but I'm going to put an adjustable rod type lift on it to better control depth. I just haven't decided on a design yet. Would like a side dresser one day. I have disc hillers I could bed up with, access to welder I could build something with and I could also just use shovel plows. I made a furrow attachment for my troy bilt tiller as well and I guess I could even use that. Using a middle buster is just how grandpa did it and is how he showed me to do it. Keep the replies and ideas coming, and thanks for the pics if you can send them. It's very interesting to see how different people solve the same problems.

What are you trying to plant? That might lead to the answer you want...I'll go measure the shovel width.

You mentioned disk hollers... One nice thing about disk hillers is that after making the row, they can be turned around to cover the row up.

Pinkeye purple hull peas, Merit sweet corn, Alabama black eyed running butter beans, new potatoes, top ground potatoes, several different tomatos & peppers, straightneck squash, zucchini, cucumbers and a few watermelons if I have the space. I have pepper & tomato seeds germinating in transplant pots now. Missed the window to plant my new potatoes this past weekend. Been really wet here & just rained again yesterday.

Here's what I made. It got run over by a hopper bottom full of corn and took a twist. I just haven't had time to heat it up and straighten it out. My welds held!

To lay rows off I do what Boss said using 7" sweeps. But for digging taters I threw together a plow that works pretty good and could be used as a middle buster. I added a 16" furrower from agri supply. http://www.agrisupply.com/mm-furrower/p/36793/

That is about what I was looking at doing, Georgia Boy. I have a solid toolbar going across the back I can use to mount it to though. The 3 plow rig is pretty cool too, CapeCodCubs.
