Seat Question

I have to replace the seat on my 50 model. It has the stock metal pan seat. Was the deluxe seat and option for these older models? I want to restore it as stock as I can but I also want it to bed comfortable to ride for an hour or two. What would I need to convert it and can I buy new parts or better to look for good used stuff?

I've owned both the delux seat and pan seat, and personally, really don't see much difference. To switch to the delux seat you will need the two mounting brackets and the delux seat frame (which is difficult to find and generally pretty expensive), then you have to buy the seat cushon and back cushon. If you try to buy all new stuff, you're probably looking at $400 or more. Personally, I'd get the pan seat redone and stick with it. The delux seat was not offered as an option until the 1960s, I think.

Rare International Harvester Farmall Cub 1948? Upholstered Seat Instructions

These would be the two options available in 1950. The Deluxe Seat was not listed as an option in the TC-37D Revision 1 Parts Catalog (Revised 12-54). I don't have a scanned copy of the TC-37E on the server yet and that is the edition that would see the first entry of the Deluxe Seat along with the Lo-Boy.

thanks Rudi, that ends my dilemma. I found in the parts manual that an optional seat was offered and just thought it must have been the pan and deluxe. If it wasn't available until 60, I would rather stay with stock. It also helps knowing that someone else doesn't think the deluxe made a lot of difference in comfort.

Personally, I really like the pan seat. Unfortunately mon derriere doesn't like it much. I really need to get mine upholstered with a little extra padding. I have a tie on but it just doesn't fill the bill.

Rudi, if you have the arthritis like I do, you will find that removing the stop from the bottom of the seat post shaft, will allow the seat to turn and swivel. The rod will not come out unless you take it out. I remove them from all my cubs with pan seats.

This movement reduces fatigue, and allows you to "float" with the terrain.

I drove big truck for many years, and when you loosen up the seats so they move front to back and up and down with the road, you can stay fresh so much longer and not be worn out when you get to your destination.

This experience applies to the cub's pan seat too, when the stop bracket is removed.

It is a very expensive proposition, tough to justify the cost. Seriously, the best way to get one is with a tractor attached to it

TM used to sell a very well padded cover for the pan seat, had twice the foam of others on the market. Not sure if they are still available elsewhere.

I like that idea very much. It would certainly make watching things behind the tractor much easier to see, much less torque on the spine and lower back I would think.

Where is the best place to buy a replacement? Both the seats I have are rusted out so I have to replace the seat and coushin. Several places I have looked had the new cover attached to the pan. Isn't this what I want? Or is it best to buy a pan, then a cover? I like the idea of being able to add extra padding.

The best place to buy a replacement is wherever you find the best price. 4-bolt pan seats run about $90-$125 depending on who you buy it from and what the covering is. They're pretty much all the same quality.

I don't think you can buy a new "bare" pan seat. The new ones all come covered and padded, and you can buy a secondary pad/cover from your local Tractor Supply for less than $20.

It was fairly common for farmers to retrofit the deluxe seat to older Cubs. This was very common on the Super A's. At any rate, I put a deluxe seat on my Cub several years ago, along with new silver cushions. I really like it compared to the pan seat.

These cushions are usually under $20- at farm and ranch supply stores. I have a couple. They have strings to attach the cushion to pan seats. They are not flat as appears in the photo. Once installed the cushion conforms to the shape of the pan seat.

Since your seat is rusted out you might advertise in the wanted section for a sound used seat. Lots of them out there. You can always get one of the tie on cushions for it because most any you find used will have the original padding worn off.
