Hello all,
I copied an interesting letter from International Harvester Company I found in a pile of Farmall manuals at an estate sale. How do you post copies of pdf files? I would like to post it. It is over 40 years old and provides some interesting reading. It was sent to the farmer in my town who requested an operators manual...

Chris:
You can't post copies of pdf files in a thread. You can post a link to a pdf file or you probably can upload a copy of a pdf file to the forum, but for it to show as a graphic, as my granddaughter says, fahgetit.
This is one of the reasons why I always scan and save as a .jpg. Mulit use. Not sure what to tell you aside from maybe rescan into jpegs for the letter.
Out of curiosity. What manuals did you find.

All kinds of stuff. Will add pix...brush hogs, Famall H parts manuals, Farmall service manuals, Deere H plows, David Bradley manuals...it is the letter which I thought was cool. I also found a huge jar of brake pad rivets....a little too big for the Cub.. Only $5 bucks for a 4 inch stack of manuals and a thousand brake pad rivets!
I scanned the letter but do not know how to convert to jpegs...
Email sent to Rudi

Chris, most scanner software will give you the option of scanning as pdf or jpg. Try scanning it again and see if that options isn't there somewhere.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Chris:
Got it and I will try to convert it to jpeg. Will let you know how it works out. And yes, as I mentioned, you could rescan it and when the software asks for the output folder you should also be able to change output type. Some scanner software is more complicated than others.

This method sounds more difficult than it is but only uses tools that virtually everyone has. The results should be high enough quality for a page of text.
1 ) Open the PDF.
2 ) Scale it so the whole page can be seen without scrolling, or make smaller if it suits your need.
3 ) Hit Ctrl-PrtScr to put a screen shot in your cut/paste buffer.
4 ) Open an image manipulation program (you probably have Paint).
5 ) Hit Ctrl-V to insert the previously saved screen shot.
6 ) Reduce the view so the whole page shows without scrolling.
7 ) Crop the image to only the page. Resize if you want to.
8 ) Save as a JPG.

I have the full Adobe package so perhaps the Reader is restricted. File, Export, choose your poison.

Wow! That was a few years before one could just download one of Rudi's manuals online, huh.

Re: Letter from IHC to a local farmer 40 years ago
Not that confusing...probably hard to read. Sorry I couldn't turn it into a JPeg file...had a meeting on an addition to a Providence Fire Station I am designing. Anyway Mr Lucardi wrote to IHC requesting an operators manual.
They wrote back:
We are in receipt of your request for an operators manual for the Farmall H Tractor.
This tractor has been out of production since 1953 and our supply of manuals has been exhausted. Because we have so few calls for this type of equipment, we do not plan to reprint. It is the policy to print the manuals for ten years and the parts catalogs for twenty years after production ceases.
We have, however, xerox pages of the lubrication and specifications for this tractor which we feel will be of some help to you. However, if you have any serious problems or questions regarding this machine, we suggest contact the International Harvester dealer in your community who will be glad to be of service to you.
We are sorry we could not be of more assistance to you.
Thank you for the inquiry.
And attached to the letter I found were xeroxed copies on very nice manilla paper for Mr Albert Lucardi.
Pretty awesome I thought.
Thanks Rudi for helping convert the letter. I know this is not Cub related but it is Farmall related and feel free to move it as needed be.
I did like the historical comments as to how long after production ceases that the continue to print the manuals.
Chris
Thanks for explaining how to turn a PDF into a JPEG file guys

If a company sent out a letter like that in this day and age there would be angry threads on forums from sea to shining sea.

Why? It was 40 years ago and they did send him the parts catalog which was 20 years after the production ceased and some very nice copies of the operators manual. And 39 years later he was still planting corn with his Farmall right up until his death.
Edit:
I get it Matt, yes people would be mad, but it most likely wouldn't happened in this modern times. Chris
