Farmall Cub

trying to get my dads 48 cub running again any ideas on where to get a new carb for it
yhe old IH carb is shot thanks ior any info this is a experiance for me & my son

I would suggest attending Cecil's MiniFest on April 20th in Kinderhook.
He is a carb guru and can probably get your existing carb working just fine.
Plus, you'll meet a bunch of people from the forum.

why not rebuild it ? check with boss hog, he'll get you fixed up in no time.

Unless the carb had a hole in it, or the float supports broken off, it is rebuildable. Steiner tractor has a reasonably good, complete rebuild kit. I second Peter's suggestion, to attend Cecil's minifest. Ed

So, suggest the very first thing you do is read the McCormick Farmall Cub Operator's Manual 5-1-49.

I am assuming that the carb you have is the IH 3/4" Updraft. This one:



New reproductions are almost $300.00 .. pretty expensive however original ones are available. I am not sure what you mean by "shot", as most of them can be rebuilt. Cecil rebuilds them as well as a few others as well. I rebuild them up here in Canada for friends and neighbours and if I can do it anyone can. Takes a little time and the right kit. The IH Kit or the Steiner Kit are the only ones that I use. The rest are worthless. I would suggest that you send a PM to Cecil and inquire. If you are close - and it seems you are only about 80 minutes from Cecil's, the Spring Mini-Fest is April 20th at his place - check the CubFest and Gatherings Calendar 2013 for information.

I concur with others regarding the possibility of a rebuild. if you can attend Cecil's event, be assured if it can be repaired either he or Don can do it .
It will be done correctly and tested. JMHO

threads are pretty much gone on fuel inlet, son goes to boces & his teachers a pretty good wrench & stumped him but that dosnt mean alot, i get along great with most carbs but this one. amgoing to look into mini-fest thanks

The inlet can be helicoiled. Ed

Inlet thread repairs are not uncommon- they just need to make sure the helicoils are in stock. The tops are usually warped and some kits are worse than no kit at all.

Try to make time to go to Cecil's CubFest. I have seen those guys take some nasty looking carbs and turn them into a nice looking, working piece again. All you need are the parts. You'll be glad you went. A great group of guys will be there.

thank you guys for all the advice cecil got the carb all ready to go we still had a timing problem but got it fixed & dads old cub is up & running if i remember right the last time it was running was 88 or 89 anyway have another ? does anybody use a lead additive in the gas in these & if so what kind ? again THANK YOU

Simple answer: Lead Additives are not required. See the link in Bill's post.

Glad you got to go to Cecil's and that your Cub is now running. Have fun with the Cub. I am sure you and your son will get a lot of good quality son/pop time together.
