What the best way to remove the front axle pivot pin? I carefully heated the front and the back after removing the bolts. I've run out of PB. I bet it's gonna have to be manipulated into the press - or os there an easier way.

I had to get mine red hot and drive it out. It wouldn't budge without lots of heat.

Is it stuck in the axle or the lower bolster?

If it is in the bolster you can spread it by driving a chisel in the slot in the bottom

THe bolster rocks correctly and easily on the shaft.

I agree with Boss Hog. Just don't over due the spreading of the cast flanges, and break one off. Just enough to loosen the shaft pin. BTW--- the bolts have to be completely removed, they ride in grooves in the shaft pin.

The pin should not move in the bolster, it should move in the axle

Hi Boss - I'm sill learning what part is what. Sure enough - It's not moving in the bolster. Silly me forgot the Pivot Shaft Runs through the axle - being held by the bolster on either side.

Bolts are all the way out. Going to need to purchase one new one. The threads where it passed through the bolster about where it rubbed the Pivot Shaft are all buggered up. Even a die won't fix these....

I am little anxious about spreading the cast on the bolster. Good caution will be observed.

I just removed mine. It may be the first time it's been removed in over 60 years. Remove both of the bolts. You'll have to have the axle perfectly supported as not to put the pin in a bind after it comes out of the first bolster. And for some reason mine wouldn't drive out backward (towards rear of tractor). I had to lay on the ground and drive it out the front.

I found out that the grease fitting had not been there - who knows for how long??? It took lots of heat - one good sized welt on the back of my left hand - but it's out. I found out there was NO Bushing in the back of the axle. The front bushing is there - but not the rear....Seems ODD. One more part to buy.....

I am attempting to also remove the front axle pivot shaft pin. I have my engine in the shop so the steering block housing and front axle assembly is on the ground upside down where the radiator would rest (the radiator is also off). I got the pin almost nearly out through the axle, it has less than an inch left to go till its just in the bolster (bolsters are spread) and yet it wont budge any further. I am going to hardware store to find a metal dowell slightly smaller diameter than the pivot shaft pin so I can try to properly knock it out, but I before I go I'll try hoisting the axle up as if its in the normal position and perhaps the weight off the axle to support itself will try. anyways, I don't recommend anyone tries it with the axle upside down.

The pin may be "mushroomed" from previous removal, and then being beaten with a BFH to reinstall. Sometimes it can be removed more easily from the other direction, but if you already have it that far out, you may be able to use a file, grinder or sandpaper to reduce the diameter of the end that is binding.

PS. Be very careful reinstalling the pin...you MUST line up the two divets on the pin that allow the two securing bolts to pass through. There is virtually no way to rotate that pin once installed. Also, don't forget the shims!

I removed my front axle last may to tighten the castle nut to tighten the steering up and my pin pushed in and out very easily. but I did have trouble lining up the shims and the axle to the pin.

You can tighten that nut without removing the axle. Disconnect tire rods, and turn steering all the way to left. Reach in through front and put an open end wrench on the nut with wrench positioned so it will hit the side of housing and hold it from turning. Then turn steering wheel to the right. Repeat as needed. Easier if you have a second person to hold the wrench, but not absolutely necessary.
