Ampmeter and ...

In our 1948 the ammeter is mounted in the right hand hole in the gas tank support. There is another hole filled with a blank (knock-out). What would have been in that hole - if it had been used?

So far as I know, the second hole was never used, but on al of my cubs the ammeter is NOW in the left hole and the oil pressure gauge has been replace/relocated to the right hole.

As a side note, in mid-year 1949 the panel layout was changed and the second knock-out was eliminated. The light switch was moved to the position of one of the knock-outs.

To echo John:

Ellie's has already been done - as in Oil gauge is now in the right hand knockout and the ammeter is in the left. Granny is the next one that will get this mod and every other Cub I get will have the very same mod. I like the oil gauge up front and center so I can see it clearly.

While you have you '48 disassembled, now would be the time to relocate the ammeter and the oil gauge. The plumbing for the gauge is not difficult. What you will need is a backing plate for the gauge or better yet, do what I did and use an oil gauge from an H or an M or another one of the letter series that have the oil pressure gauge in the dash panel. You will be glad you did.

It ain't exactly "correct", but it sure is handy.

Oh, the not so original key switch has been replaced with the more correct and more functional single pole kill switch for magneto equipped Cubs :D

So gents - when I bring RauCub-1 to Cecil's in the fall - How many points are deducted by the "Correct Police" for having the oil pressure gauge in the dash? :D :D :D

It has always been my understanding that the Correct Police are not allowed at Cub Fests, or, at least if they are, they have no jurisdiction. :D

I understand the reason for putting the oil gauge in the dash, but why in the right hand hole if it takes moving the Amp gauge to the left? I know it's tight behind there but it shouldn't be that tight that the oil gauge couldn't go on the left.

Mark:

It is far easier to move the ammeter than make the bends for the oil gauge .. well for me at least.

Thanks Rudi, I thought it might be a problem with the bends.

Well, that's my story .. and I am stickin to it :big smile:

The next time I do this, I will be making sure that I bend the tubing correctly. Darn that is almost a trade in itself if not a very specialized skillset. You have to be able to visualize in multiple planes at the same time, co-ordinate the brain-eye-hand components to get the bends right. You don't want to see my scrap box of mucked up bends
