Postby Ray 59 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 6:13 pm

The starting and lighting attachment owners manual has a article on cleaning the commutator with 00 sandpaper not emery or caborundum cloth. This would be 00 grit but what type of sandpaper would work? Ray

Aluminum oxide sand paper. You can pick up some aluminum oxide sand paper at any hardware store since your reference says not to use emery.

I use emery sand paper, 600 grit, because I have it. Just clean out the grooves between the commutator segments.
I have an excuse. CRS.

If memory serves, emery cloth contains iron particles and carborundom carbon particles which are both conductive to electricity which could cause short circuiting of the commutator by pieces left deeply embedded within the groves.

Pick up cheap sand paper with a 240 grit or higher number.
