Radiator Overflow

I saw a photo online somewhere showing what looks to be a steel line running from the radiator top down through the fan guard and out the bottom. To the best of my knowledge RauCub-1 has never had this complete line. It's been a nub for as long as I can remember.

What material would this line have been made of? Has anyone rebuilt this line? If yes, what material did you use and how was it fastened to the radiator fill cap - solder or brazing?

Ken it is made from steel tubing. It is soldered to the radiator neck and goes thru a bracket at the bottom of the radiator. I usually just order one from TM but I'm sure you could make one if you had a pattern.

If you want it to look like the day it was born then you may have to make one. I don't see them listed on TM's site anymore.

TM no longer sellls them, I have a new one but have not figured out how to copy it, the bends are so close to each othe near the neck to clearance the hood I have not been able to duplicate without kinking the tubing

The late-late Cubs have a nub and a rubber hose that runs off to one side. You could do it that way. Most if not all of the replacement radiators come with the short tube for a hose.

I think I'll need to go rubber, but have considered copper, sprayed silver. Like Tom (TST), I don't know how to bend steel without kinking it. I've thought if heating steel line and bending it carefully to the proper radius. It's actually more a matter of available time.

Mine is copper must have been replaced at some time? It does look good and is soldered in at the top the only way I knew it was copper because I striped the tractor for paint.

Could you use the sand trick? Never tried it, heard about it years ago. Get pipe longer than needed. Fill with fine sand and crimp/solder ends closed. After bending to spec cut to length and blow out sand.

The one on my '53 was disconnected but I was able to solder it back in place. If memory serves, I believe it is 3/8" dia, thin wall tubing. A tubing bender is what you need to bend the tubing but thin wall tubing kinks easily. Maybe danovercash's sand thing along with the bender might be the trick. :wink:

I used a piece of 5/16 steel tubing and a tubing bender to route mine around the fan shroud, then through the hole in the bottom of the lower radiator housing near the crank pulley. I did this because I felt the fan was too close to my new radiator to run the tubing through the shroud. I used a short piece of rubber hose to connect it to the outlet on the filler neck and used one hold down bracket to hold the steel tubing against the fan shroud. It was easy to make and it looks real nice if you notice it at all. I'll take a picture and post it if you like.

They are a good size Ray. Any smaller would be hard to see details. Thanks for posting the pics. Nice job on the overflow tube. :D
