While putting my T/C unit back together, I noticed the two boots were shot; cracked and brittle. Went to Tandy leather and bought a bag of leather scraps. Figured out the length and width of what I needed to make two cones. After going thru several paper templates, I settled on what I thought was very close, so made a mylar template.



Traced and cut out the leather.



Small boot:

My wife's sewing machine (Janome 4800 Memory Craft) can take chisel point needles for leather. I sewed a line along each open end (top and bottom in pic below) instead of folding it over, then I sewed the two sides together (left side of each in picture below).



Installed with wire.

What was your method of cleaning the TC unit before dis-assembly? I noticed that it is mostly down to bare metal and SPOTLESS! Seems like when I try to clean something as dirty as this....I use the Purple Power de-greaser and steam clean it 4 times before it is clean.....then there's always some dirt/grease left behind something.

Thanks. I putty knived all the big chunks, the used Super Clean (Castrol) and a stiff wire brush or whatever brush was handy. Hosed it off and dried with towels and compressed air. Super Clean is not environmentally friendly like Purple Power, but I think it's stronger. Does a good job. Even after I cleaned it, while reaching up into the furthest cavity of the unit, I noticed oily sludge still way up in there.

Yeah, you've just got to clean, clean, clean,....then clean again when washing these old tractors; as some of them have probably NEVER had a bath since new. haha. I'm gonna have to try the "Super Clean" since I'm due for a new pail of degreaser. I always use Purple Power and it works good. (Shhhh...I work for the state environmental agency, so don't tell 'em I'm not being environmentally friendly )
