Farmall Cub

I have two 1948 farmall cubs and am to the point of mounting new tires on one of them. I have the wheels stripped of all the old shredded rubber and will be sandblasting and otherwise cleaning them up in preparation for new tires. I need to identify the paint colors for the wheels to get started. I have seen some discussions of the silver color for the wheel itself and the fact that the hub should be Harvester Red. Does anyone know what that translates to in a common spray paint colors that can be purchased locally at home depot etc?

Personally, I like to use Rustoleum Hammered Silver for the rims. However, I'm not sure what the closest match would be for a red color.

The Case IH Iron Guard paint is just about the best stuff you can buy, and will hold up and look a LOT better than anything Rustoleum has. They have it in spray cans also, so you don't have to buy a quart or gallon. It will cost more, but it's well worth it! There are two colors for Case IH International Red, and you want 2150 red (or as the parts guy will say, Old IH red, not New IH Red).

I agree with Bill - If you've got a CaseIH dealer that close - don't short changed your restoration by using any other paint. My local dealer sells rattle cans for $12.00/can. Also, my dealer does indeed call it the Old IH Red.

I've used the Rustoleum Hammered Silver as well. Does okay. Because of its "hammered" appearance, it can mask some of the rim's imperfections or divits.

Believe I've also used a silver from an auto parts store called Duplicolor Engine Enamel. Rated for higher heat temps, so I figured it would also be a better quality paint (even if I'm not peeling out or buring rubber with my Cub! ). Both it and the Rustoleum were about the same.

Ultimately, the choice is yours. I've seen rims painted red or cream as well.

i use an automotive paint, it's more durable and it last a long time and has an excellent shine. i use rattle can on another and was not happy with it.

Original finish was galvanized. If you have access to powder coating and want an extremely durable finish that will stand up to tire irons, mirror silver powder coat is beautiful. I also like the hammered finish. I used that paint on some under hood components on a car that I had and really liked it. The original Hammerite brand has glass flakes and special resins that set up to a very tough finish that can be painted over rust. I think it is tougher and more durable than any other rattle can paint. I am not sure if Rustoleum is as good as Hammerite- I don't have any experience with it. At one time Hammerite was the only supplier. I emptied my cans on a rusty mailbox pipe and it looked great for years until it was mowed down by a texting driver.

Have to give the sandblast/powdercoat my vote if you can find someone w/reasonable price. $125 gets full set (front, rear {rims silver-center red on rear} blasted & coated. Can't spend my time sanding, priming & painting for those $$$! Dusty B

I used Centauri Ford argent silver. Paint store recomended it over GM silver. I have been very satisfied. BTW, it's your tractor, paint it the colors you like!

I've had good luck with Ag-West in Hillsboro. It's where I get my Cub parts. I'd give them a try.

wife and i looked at a rattle can of cub cadet yellow this am at TSC--$7.00--that was too much for me and we walked--can't imagine payin $12.00 for a can of red for a cub but i have been called cheap before
