Boy I'll tell ya, ya'll got the corner on the market in the south and the midwest on these kind of finds. Craigs List and eBay in this area is devoid of such finds. Either I am not looking in the correct places or I'm short of time.

This is word of mouth, networking and going above and beyond to help with info and hands on. Plus, when you get towards the South, there wasa lot of tobacco grown, and the cub is almost perfect for that crop.

My 73 has the clutch safety switch. Is that normal for a 73?

I think the clutch safety switch was added in the 72 model year.

Yes, the safety switch is not unique to the Long Stripe Cubs. It was added at serial number 239827 (1972)

On both my 1974 and 1977 Cubs, the switch was disabled. I was able to restore my 1977 to the original function by buying the paddle that engages a switch when the clutch is depressed. It was cut off by the PO. Not that I am crazy about starting with the clutch in- it just adds more drag for the starter. I always start the tractor from the seat anyway.

The steering parts are the same, but I agree with you on that. My '74 (not a Long Stripe) is one sweet mowing tractor because of the steering and the low hour engine. I think many of the super powers attributed to LS Cubs is because they are 40-something rather than 60-something year old tractors.

Thanks for the replys Bob and Paul. My switch is also disabled, it turns over much better with no switch. My 73 also steers much easier than my 53!

Long stripes are pretty rare. I think they made more Cubs in month in 1949 then the entire long stripe production, about 5500 total. Steering changed somewhere even before 12v at SN 221871. I think the steering shaft being longer is the easy way to tell, different gear too. 24 tooth vs 21.

Long stripes have Zenith carb (choke cable, enlarged manifold inlet, intake hose is all rubber), Delco alternator (no voltage regulator), key start (no push button) and more HP. With those clues you can look at either side of the engine and tell pretty quickly.
