My 52, the BEAST the knock.

My 52 the beast the knock.

Well I got this and probably have two but in it but I have been wanting one so I snagged it up.

A friends neighbor had it and said he was using it and it just died. He thought the carb was bad, put a kit in and never got it going again.

I work on old Harley's and old 8N 9N fords among other so I figured I could get it running again.

tweak with the carb and finally got that all ironed out, re-set the points, gaped the plugs but no fire.
It seems the switch was bad and the coil was a 12 volt. The old 6 volt was in the tool box so I checked it out and it seems okay, put it on, replaced the switch had fire so I got her fired up, made some bad squealing sound so I shut it down and found the bell housing and clutch was packed full of dirt dauber nests. So cleaned that out and moved on.
This time every thing sounded great running about 20 lbs of pressure at low RPMs and almost 40 lbs at high RPMs, but after the tractor worms up she is knocking at high RPMs.
I am hearing it as a rod and I believe # two not that that matters much.

I am trying to decide on how I want to proceed.
One I am think of dropping the pan and see what thing look like first. Depending on what I see just replace the bearings with some new .002 overs. And do a ring job ( again depending on what I see in the cylinder ).

I really do not want to tear this tractor down at the moment but would like to use it so bearing and rings seems like it might be a possible solution depending on how she looks.

I have a machine shop here but I am in the process of rebuild a lathe and a mill, not to mention a couple old excelsior drill presses line up to do next. And about four old Harley engines in need of major overhauls.

I must decide park this for a couple years or try and see if I can get buy with a ring job and bearings.

Open for any and all input.

Sounds like you got the bull by the horns, so I guess you have to decide whether to try and ride it or throw it to the ground...You've got the knowledge which is a great plus....If you can wrench a Panhead you can handle this with no sweat...But only you can decide your schedule....Sounds to me like you probably already have, you just need a little push....OK you got it.....Dave...1990 Harley Electra Sport , no fiberglass, all leather, bought new for 8900.00..Will have it until....Had a couple before it...Since I got home from Nam....Have fun with the Cub....

Number one rod is at the end of the oil delivery path and that one is usually the culprit. Like you said, it does not matter. I would at least drop the pan to see where I stand.

Looks like number three is the culprit.
she spun: (
Dose don't look real bad but grrr not what I wanted to see.
Aside from some pitting from siting in fowl oil ( looks like it was not change very often if ever ),and not being run in who nows how long for sure, I was surprised at just how not so bad they where ( number three excluded).
The crank mics out from 1.4969 to 1.4976 a little wear.

if oil pressure is still good after it warms up at high speed but you still have a knock it is probabley a wrist pin or piston slap.

It sounded like a rod to me and after dropping the pan and seeing a spun bearing? I could and other issues but it had a rod knocking for sure.
I hope to have more time tomorrow to look at it. And decide what I will do. She my set for a while and I might just go through it. Still not sure. I just to much going on to take on an another overhaul at this time.
