Block Questions

I bought two cub blocks this weekend, and have a few questions for those in the know. First the yellow one that I got has a strange serial number, or strange to me, it is 60CT20318278X With a cast code of 9-23-Z which I take to mean 1976, and the part number is 251341-R8, Would this have been on a regular cub? Second question, there is some piting around the cylinder, How much can the head gasket take care of before the block would need to be decked? This block is standard bore with no ring groove and looks to have at least one cylinder that has been sleaved. I checked the bore with a caliper, and then used a compression ring of standard size one inch below the top of the cylinder, it has a gap of .014. I will try to post a pic of the block but I am on dial-up. any comments are welcome.

I think you may be ok as far as sealing if you use copper coat or the like on the gasket

I do not have any documentation, but I believe I read that your serial number was used on the numbered lowboys.

I'm not in front of my database, but around '73-'74, all the C-60 engine SN's switched to this style numbering system.
If you bought a bare block, it's impossible to tell what it originally came off of. If it had the water outlet, crank, or alternator/generator still attached, we might be able to tell you.

Just my two cents, but if you are rebuilding that block with the pitting on top, I would have it surfaced to remove the pitting along with the cylinder head.

The guy that I bought these from, told me that they came from a regular cub and not a lowboy, but I am not sure that he knew. They were in a machine shop that he had taken over, and may have been left by their owners. I will attach another pic of the pit problem, but it is not much better than the others.

Could you look at that EngineSN number again? I'm thinking it might be 60CT2U------X
"60CT2U" is the prefix for the C-60 engine, then followed by the 6 digit engine SN, followed by the "X". I haven't figured out what the "X" means yet.

X at the end of a chassis serial normally indicated gasoline and was followed by a number indicating other options such as high altitude, gear set, etc. I have never found a listing showing what an X at the end of an engine serial meant. The book I have ends with V as a engine serial suffix list.

I guess that I knew what should be done, but I am always looking to save a little. Like the old words of wise, pay me now, or pay me more later. I would hate to put all that work into an engine, and then have to do it all over again. The other block that was with this one is a red 1951 that has been bored out .010, but looks good as far as wear and cracks. Serial number FCUBM 140033. There were other parts included with these that I didn't need, but someone may at some point, 2 sets hydrolic lines, a pump, 3 governers, parts of two carburators, starter, rods, pistons, valves, 2 flywheels
