Does anyone have a good idea regarding how to get one of those detent balls out of the bottom of the transmission where the cockamamie thing escaped to??

Am I the only idiot that this has happened to?

Andrew:

The answer to question 1 is yes and the answer to question 2 is no. BTDT .. so welcome to the club.

The answer to how to get the detent ball out of the bottom of the tranny is to us a telescoping magnet -- the small ones. Wrap a number of layers of black electrical tape around the outside of the magnet which will keep it from sticking to the side of the case. You should be able to fetch that ball out real easy.

Something like this:

Telescoping pen magnent! An invaluable tool to the Cub enthusiast (or those with slippery fingers)

Are you certain that it fell down inside the casing? The only reason I ask is I thought I dropped one down there as well but it turned out that it had slipped sideways back into the rod hole instead. A couple times in a row while I was pushing down against the ball and trying to get the rod to pass over it I would lose grip somewhere and the ball would come up and shoot down the rod hole. I had to use a magnet and a short bolt to fish down the hole and retrieve it.

Hows the clutch :D , you may have to wash it out with kerosine to get the sticky gear grease out to get the ball out with a magnet , and it may flush out with the kero

One year at the Bash, Ralph and I spent 45 minutes trying to fish out a ball. Ended up having to take off the full PTO plate and then it was easy to find. Hopefully you won't need to do that.

Any powerful magnet on the side of a long screwdriver will do the job, too.

The real question is though, what are YOU doing in a tranny?

If you can't get it with a magnet don' panic. Replace it with a new one. Many Cubs are running around with at least one ball in the housing. I personally know two. :D

I am glad you save em up and pick the best one to ask annually.

Of course the answer is to tip the tranny (or Cub) upside down and shake it till the ball falls out.
