Great job with the how to !!
Since I have my Cub tore down to the clutch housing transmission and finals I figured aww heck.. Looks easy, I should do this it while I'm this far right? Well.. I started with the right side and to my amazement the whole diff shaft came out with the final! Did I just completely screw up or does it go back in the way it came out? I'm now figuring I should remove and clean the diff shaft housing and of course replace the seal. Am I on the right track? Does this sound correct?
If you are referring to the long shaft that goes from the transmission to the final, then yes it's normal for it to come out with the final. The left side of course is much shorter. To get to the seal on the right side of the transmission, you'll have to pull the seat, battery box and axle extension.
When you go to reinstall you'll have to thread the shaft back through the axle extension into the transmission being careful not to damage the seal.
Great.. Ya I already have all those parts off so I took off the axel extension and I'm replacing the seal now. Just needed a little reassurance

You probably already have, but make sure you check your brakes while you have it all apart, because you sure don't want to do it again anytime soon!!! Sounds like you have it under control! Good luck!
So that was the other reason for pulling the finals. The brakes definitely don't look like the one's in this post but they do look like they are miss alined or something. There is wear only across half the pad, any thoughts on this? The linkage might need replacing, I will see after I get the rust off.

There's only these on Cubs before #173600 (Jun of '53 I think) or the toggle style for all others including Lo Boys. The toggle adds a pivoting "Y" shaped piece between the rod and the band to give you a little more umph when pushing the pedal.
If they are wearing only on half the band then I would think the brake drum itself is either loose or in the wrong position. It should be against the shoulder on the axle with the woodruff key in the slot and the bolt tightened down. When you have it against the shoulder tightening the bolt wedges it against the shoulder. If it's out some then just the bolt is holding it in place and it may walk on the axle over time.
If you have the axle extension off just bolt it to the final and it makes it easier to insert the axle back into the tranny without ruining the seal. A helper is a plus.

I meant the brakes don't look quite as bad as the ones pictured here, they are the same type. I think you are correct about the drum "walking".
