Flail Mower

Postby 357cyrus » Thu May 16, 2013 7:07 am

Going to look at one of these today. Looking for your advice on what "redflags" to look for. Below is the only picture I have at the moment, and I'm not sure if it's got all the parts to hook it up. Price is $175 OBO. Are these mowers strong enough to cut through blackberry bramble, maybe some sapplings about the size of #2 pencils?

This manual http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/index.php?dirpath=./files/OEM%20Implement%20and%20Attachment%20Manuals%20and%20Brochures/Mott%20Mowers&order=0 may help you out. The pics aren't the greatest, however, should be sufficient to give you the info you need to determine if it is all there.

It's a lawn mower, not a brush hog. It will handle an occasional small branch or bramble.

Mule drive, can't tell, but appears to be missing a pulley.

Appears to be complete, but photos from opposite end needed. Bill has posted link to the manual.

Be aware that you will probably need to replace the knives, belt, and perhaps a bearing or two to put the flail mower into good shape.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Are you using it on a Int'l LoBoy or Regular Cub?
Fast-Hitch or Drawbar?

Depending on the above will determine what model this mower is for.

Bearings in the cutter shaft and roller... both have grease fittings that are often ignored. Both should spin freely. Not a deal breaker though.

Not ideal for a brush cutter, but may work well enough?? Find someone with a sharpener, makes a big difference when it's sharp.

they are rough service lawn mowers, and will handle light brush and blackberry brambles, if you do not get too carried away. Blades can be sharpened with a hand held 4 1/2 inch grinder, and blades as well as parts can be purchased from flailmaster.com. I do not see the idler pulleys and bracket (mule drive), which are hard to come up with separately. That has the early style lift arms, and on that model the idler pulleys were originally on a bar that was welded to the drawbar brackets.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

With nice sharp knives these will handle woody stemmed weeds and brambles decently. I've mowed radiator cap high rag weed and milkweed in the fall with little problem.

Saplings, even smallish ones, tend to get wound round the cutter shaft and jammed it up. Tall, thick grass and green stemmed weeds really make the mower work hard.

Good luck.

I see the bar with the drawbar brackets and can see at least one pulley. The second pulley may also be there.

Thanks, Ill probly just head over and snap some pictures for myself today, take them home and sort out what's what, maybe post them here. Then decide. Not really worried about brush, just mainly an over grown path that I keep down with a push type weed eater. Just a few brambles , seedlings always make it up.

You need to answer the two (2) questions in my previous post before you buy this particular unit.
The mower should have a S/N - Model # Plate on it too.

I missed it on my first look, but Jim is right, eht bar along with the drawbar brackets is there and I can see at leat one pulley, and possibly the edge of the second one. Be sure to check the pto pulley for cracks, they are cast iron and due to the flexing mounting and removing, and the think spokes tend to crack with age. An 8 inch pulley from a Woods mower can be used, but may have to mount it with the bolts facing the tractor to get the belt to line up right.

I thought it looked to be in pretty good shape. The Roller spun. The cutter shaft spun when the pulley was turned. The knives all seemed to swing, didn't see any missing. The drive and idler pulleys both spun pretty freely. The belt looked like it would probably need replaced, maybe get a little use out of it. Couldn't find a model number though. Thinking I'll offer $150 and see if I can get it unless you guys see something missing I didn't catch. Good deal, average deal? Just curious what you guys think.

Since I already have a flail mower, I would pick it up just for spare parts.

It looks to be in good shape! Surely worth the $$ for the parts if nothing else. I would guess it to be an old one for a couple of reasons; the narrow blades (3/4") and the lack of a hole for the roller 'rock guard'. My Lo Boy mower is essentially the same vintage, about 1956. I have resorted to using the available wider blades (in a group of 8 to keep balance) but that one looks perfect for it's age.
