Long time lurker, hoping someone can confirm my suspicions before I tear in to it...
The cub is actually my parents, been in the family since my grandfather bought it in '65 or so (I think it is technically a '63, but anyway). It has now decided to leak oil... in to the distributor (take the cap off, oil comes out... and not just a drop or two.. everything in there is pretty well soaked. I'm rather shocked it runs, but it does. I was suspicious when they told me where it was coming from, but I was up at their place last night, and sure enough, it is coming out of the distributor itself, not leaking down on to it from somewhere else (including outside the housing).
Looking at the parts diagram someone else has posted to this site, it appears the culprit may be an O ring on the shaft - am I on the right track, or is it one of the felt seals instead (and if so, where do I get one? I do have a TSC locally, and they have some parts, but not sure anything as specific as that seal).

I also have the dreaded oil in the distributor on my 53. I replaced that seal 2 years ago and now wondering if I put it in backwards. I know it has to be positioned a certain way, and I measured and that part is correct. I don't get a lot oil out of there and it does not affect how mine runs at all, it just bothers me to have any leaks of any kind.

Thank you all very much for your very warm welcome and assistance. For those of you from nearby, or who have lived nearby, you know what time of year this is - black fly season! So I'll either be trying to use their garage, or perhaps trailer it down to my house (I prefer my tools...).
We have the original Owners Manual and one other, is there a shop manual, or something similar that shows the breakdown of that area, and if so where might one purchase it? This doesn't sound too bad, but with good upkeep this will likely be my tractor in the future so I'm sure I'll need it at some point.

You'll have to also pull the governor to remove and reinstall the seal, then retime the governor upon reinstallation.
There are a couple of methods of removing the seal, that may work, without removing the governor.
First is to use a tool to hook under the lip and the back side of the seal and pull it out. Another method is to drive a sheet metal screw into the seal and pull it out.

There are three essential manuals for these tractors. The Owner's Manual you cited, Service Manual, and the parts book (TC-37) which you can find above as well in a number of different revisions.
In the parts manual that seal is called"Magneto drive seal". It can be removed without removing the governor, but be careful in doing so that you do not scratch the shaft. I have removed them with the little slide hammer type dent puller with a sheet metal screw in the end. You usually have to screw it in 3 places around the seal and keep rotating between them moving it a little at a time at each place.

Getting that seal out with the governor installed is easy, reinstalling it to the proper depth with the governor installed is not.
