Farmall Cub

What a great weekend in Western PA. Saturday, up at 6:45AM... Dismounted the Woods 59 Mower (fun...) and moved the drawbar to the front of the final drives. Drove tractor to Mother in Law's house where the Cub 193 plow was located. Mounted plow (fun). Drove 5 miles of back roads through suburbia up to Hengelsberg Hill (my name for it) where the family garden plot is located. Got lots of great seat time and saw the countryside around home at 6 MPH. (fun)...

Plowed the Hengelsberg family garden plot with my favorite uncle (Uncle Jim). Just could not get the plow to plow correctly. Would not run deep enough so that the heel was down in the furrow. My uncle and I reset the wheel width of the tractor so that it was correct with the manual, everything was set up right, but the plow just would not SUCK properly. I really need to see my plow next to another 193 plow to make sure that mine is "right"... Took out Uncle's Kubota 4WD tractor with Pittsburgh plow and tried to plow...he couldn't get his to suck down either...perhaps too dry.

Then, drove to Mom and Dad's place on Hengelsberg Hill to say hello. Then for the 5 miles home. Removed plow, flipped drawbar and got ready to mount mower back under tractor. For now, that will have to wait... I was BUSHED!

I certainly see the reason for one Cub per implement, but the fun was really worth it!

Yep, one cub per implement. Still waiting to try my plowing tractor out. Hope this september at CI FEST. Missed it last year, got sick at the last minute.

One cub per implement, is my rule. No sore back, or skinned knuckles! Ed

good to see you back Cubbing and posting again. I don't know what kind of soil you were plowing, but when I plowed my son's garden, I was surprised that it worked up much better than the black soil back in Illinois that I'm used to.

I don't know why your plow wouldn't go deep enough, but like Bill said, post some pics. You don't live too far from me so I would think our soil would be similar.

Don, yessir. Assembled as per the manual!

Are you attaching the plow under the drawbar and not up top of it? That might have something to do with it.

Unless that colter is hanging from a VERY loose hinge, it is way too low.

I won't say anything about the advantages of a Fast Hitch...... it only drives up the prices of implements. I got grease on my hands from the PTO shaft putting the mower back on after some York raking at the fort, so there is a downside too

Larry, the fast hitch ruins a good excuse to have multiple cubs! Besides, in a pinch, if a cub doesn't start, you can switch implements, get the job done, and diagnose and fix the cub, later! Ed

I agree with Jim. Shoot a pic of the colter from the side. The wear pattern on the moldboard strongly suggests that the plow is pulling "nose-down" which can be caused by the colter being too low. A contribution factor could be the point seems to be a bit thick from someone building it up. In your first pic the colter covers the end of the point. Get a pic of the point that shows it unobstructed. Oh, get some rust preventive material on the moldboard, you will appreciate it the next time you plow.

Thanks guys... I will snap some pics tonight. Just for clarification, in the first picture, the coulter has slipped to the left side of the beam (looking from behind), but this could be something for sure. I have never adjusted he coulter as yet. I had thought about trying to take it off as a trial this weekend, but didn't give it much more thought!
