Help with woods mower blade swap

Postby grunt » Mon May 20, 2013 2:09 pm

Here is the woods mower I have
Image

here is the owners manual that was given to me when I bought the mower from a board member
Image
Now I have heard that some of these woods mower use reverse thread on their bolts so I went and bought some replacements (part # 10658)

The new bolts are -not - reverse thread. So before I go heating up the bolts and applying a braker bar to them I figured I better verify which direction I should be turing them to get them off.
I also have the sheath wrench.

The easy answer is, turn the blade bolts out in the same direction as the blade rotates. From your pics, that would be to the left. Try a 1/2" impact wrench, normally a couple of "burps" will loosen the bolts right up. DON'T use the impact to tighten the bolts. Let us know how you make out.

The blade bolts are not reverse threaded on a Woods.

Can't stress this enough. You just want to get them a little more than finger tight. The action of the mower will tighten them more than you want after that. I usually do a mid-season swap (I have an extra set of blades), and even though I barely tighten the bolts, they are always a bear to get off after I have used the mower several weeks.

I use anti-seize on my mower blade bolts.

A simple rule of thumb: Right hand discharge mower = right hand threads. Left discharge = left hand threads.

When I was running my Woods deck, it blew grass out BOTH sides equally... Which way do the bolts turn?

Look at the cutting edge, should be simple from there.

well had to heat up the nuts with a torch until they went a shade of purple and use the neighbors compressor, since mine did not have enough umph for my impact wrench. It worked out fine in the end

My experience does not agree with a couple of the previous posts. I have a Woods 59 RM which can discharge from either side or both just by removing or adding the blockoff plate-- that is my understanding from the instructions.
And do tighten the blades with a wrench, not an impact. Letting the blades tighten from usage impact probably will overtighten them. Then they will be all the more difficult to remove.
Luck favors those who are prepared

From the pictures you posted it is right hand discharge and right hand threaded bolts/spindles (and nearly all Cubs with Woods 59" mowers).

Cutting edge, blade rotation as Mr Hudson pointed out will solve your dilemma...I don't see what the block off plate has to do with much....Dave
