The shims set the bearing preload to adjust for case variations. Keep the shims in order and put them back in the same place and you will not need to change anything. Bearings are precise. Castings aren't.

Ok so a couple of things I have thought of since I made this order today. I am going ahead and doubling that order for the right side as well minus the shaft . And I assume I should go ahead and get all the parts for the PTO such as seals and gasket as I will need to take it off to access the inside of the Diff.

I believe I have the parts right for what I need on the PTO and correct me if I'm wrong please :

351 270 R21 - Retainer Assy., Power take off shaft oil seal and bearing . I think I just need the fitting , oil seal and retainer though out of that assembly.

351 258 R2 - Gasket, Power Take-off shaft oil and bearing retainer

350 837 R2 - Gasket, Power Take-off adapter

The guys at JP tractor sent what I needed ! and I got the two generators back that I had rebuilt and they look brand new as well as all the internals being new and regulators. I will post a photo of them later. Next on the agenda is getting the magnetos for the 40's model tractors rebuilt.
