Stuck in Reverse

My Cub is stuck in Reverse! I am barely able to move the shifter. Sometimes I can move it to the 2nd/3rd gear positions, however when I let out the clutch, the engine nearly dies. I checked the transmission oil level, and all looks good there. I removed the top cover to the transmission to have a peek; I didn't see anything obvious. Transmissions are not my forte! Any ideas?

now that the top is off does the shifter move freely?, check the forks for being broken, or loose, you should be able to shift the trans by prying against the shift forks back and forth

It sounds like the bottom of the shifter has come out of the fork and the trans may be stuck in two gears. With the top cover off put the forks into the neutral position with a long screw driver or other long prying device that fits. Once in neutral put the cover back on making sure the bottom of the shifter rod goes into the notch. It should be good to go. You may have a problem with the workings of the top cover being worn (or come apart) allowing the shifter rod to come out of position when changing gears.

Your suggestions are pointing me in a good direction, I think. They make sense, even to a neo-phyte, such as myself. We'll see how it goes. This is all new territory for me. THANKS!
