Farmall Cub

I swore I'd never buy a square nose Cub and certainly not a yellow one...

Never say never...

Fella I went to high school with told me about this old Cub he had a couple months ago at a car show. Went and looked at it the other day and he priced it to me. Couldn't pass it up, so I hauled it home Saturday. Serial tag is gone, but it's a '67 by the casting codes. He bought it stuck several years ago. Put pistons, rings, bearing and done the valves a few years ago. Never really used it, just a toy. He has a couple really nice muscle cars and an old TO-20 he tinkers with and just decided to let it go.

Took the carb off and cleaned it a couple times, can't get it to pick the fuel up. Gonna run a compression check on it tonight and see what happens.

Has some pretty nasty hood damage, missing seat cushions. It's 12V, has pretty good tires, front are dang near new, good tool box and most of the universal mounting frame. Good solid Woods 42 mower.

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it or sell it...I really have no need or space for it...

Haha...well Ricky I don't have a garage to start with! All the tractors sit inside, trucks stay outside. Denny I wouldn't mind to keep it I don't suppose, but I'm making plans to bring an F-12 home sometime this summer, which I don't NEED either May try to convince Dad that he needs it LOL...

Ran the compression check...zip, zilch, nadda. Exhaust valve stuck on No. 1 and 2 and intake stuck on No. 2, all the rest are fine. Soaking in ATF and PB Blaster as I type. Color me disappointed...

Lots can be said for yeller Cubs...... Looks like a worthwhile project from here!

Dusti, even though you will need to paint that thing red asap, it looks like a nice project! I would love to have me a square nose one of these days.

I guess when I said "color me disappointed" that was a poor choice of words...

I do like my Cubs red, but this one is growing on me, in spite of the stuck valves. I'm not going to keep it though. If my Dad wants it, and it may have to do more with my Mom wanting it, I'll let them have it to mow the small fields around their house with. Dad has a Ford 4000, a 3000 and a Kubota, and my '56 640 that belonged to my Poppy is there. Dad really has no need for it. Mom was raised on a Cub and when she seen it Sunday after church she named it "Daisy"...thought it was cute and said it would be neat to mow with. We shall see...

Otherwise once it's running and the wiring and a few odds and ends are tidied up abit, it'll be leaving here...

Yeah but I bet all of em are orange. IMO IH made three big mistakes: Letting John McCaffrey take over in the '50s, not coming out with a powershift/synchronized transmission on their big tractors before 1981, and painting Cubs and most of the Cub Cadets yellow/white. (Red and white would have looked awesome.) I mean you take one of the most recognizable symbols of your company (red paint) and say well , let's paint em yellow!

I surely can't speak for marketing decisions.... but yeller is good color for navigating a Cub in the big city, there is some advantage to having it painted same color as school buses, especially with yankee drivers and tourists everywhere. And it does cost more than red paint. But I have accessorized with red and I can borrow the battery out of everything else I own (except a red Cub) if I need to.

Well I spent the day working on the '67. Got the valves all freed up the other evening. Changed the engine oil and filter this morning, greased it, and adjusted the valves. Put it back together and it started on the first crank, right off the bat! Couldn't believe how easy it started. Steering is nice and tight, clutch is good and smooth. Final drives and transmission are quiet as well. I did figure out that I'm not a fan of that deluxe seat at all! Can't get on and off the %&$# thing! I did take it down to the garden and mowed a couple rounds. Slung the belt off though, not sure what's up with that. Belt looked pretty good to me. All the idlers and bearings are nice and smooth too...I don't know...

Rudi I'm undecided...gettin' it running and driving and mowing with it certainly didn't help my decision any. Man, that thing runs so good, so quiet and smooth.

But I'm supposed to pick up and F12 probably next weekend...

So really, really have no idea...it would certainly be better for mowing and cultivating than "Otis", I really want to keep my little blue ribbon cub in as good a shape as possible...I'm torn...

Yep Dusti, a lot can be said for yeller Cubs.... despite their color. If you think a Cub deluxe seat is tough, try a Lo Boy!

If you don't like the deluxe seat, I will trade you a pan seat for it!
