Farmall Cub

While I was at RPRU I bought two new oil pressure guages for two of my cubs. They were offered by a vendor but were Steiner's parts, and I got a 10% show discount. plus avoided shipping costs. The part numbers are correct, but when I tried installing one yesterday, they did not fit the pipe thread in the oil filter housing. I compared them with the old guage, and the male threaded part seems to be larger than the old original. Has anyone experienced this?

I checked Steiner's website, and it states 1/8" NPT Male Thread. Where is 1/8" measured? (Seems awfully small.) Parts manuals only show the part number...no dimensions. Thanks for any input.

Dale, If I recall correctly, the pipe size relates to the ID of the pipe. However, as pipe production techniques and metallurgy has improved, the wall thickness of pipe has decreased. The OD is the same as before, so the measuring system is somewhat confusing. Could you post a picture of the old and new threads side by side?

I have the new ones with me, but I put the old one back in the tractor. I think what I will do is go back out to the farm, take the old one back out and MEASURE the male fitting and compare. The new ones were reluctant to screw in, so before I boogered them up, I just visually compared the size and it APPEARED to be larger...could have been an optical illusion, since the old one was darker with oil on it. After that comparison, I didn't try to thread the new ones in again. Proof will be in the actual measurement. Will do that and if they are different, I'll post photos with measurements, and let you know.

The vendor has been very cooperative, and said it is not impossible that Steiner's has gotten a bad batch. He will make it right, if necessary, once I find out. I'll get back to you on this.

Thanks Bob for the 1/8" clarification. I looked at the end and there is a small flat area that does appear to fit into an 1/8" hole.

go to local hardware store and get a 1/8 pipe nipple and take with you. That will give you a good comparison of size. Steiner may have taken a shortcut and just cut the ears off some of the hood mounted ones such as the H uses, but their threads are different.

I just purchased over $300.00 worth of parts from Steiner. They were either the wrong parts or inferior in quality. I will not be dealing with them again. Any perceived savings were eaten up by return charges.

I have dealt with 3 other vendors and have had excellent service from them.

I said pipe nipple, I meant coupling.

Just a follow-up...

I took the guages back out to the farm, and tried to install one again, this time with a bit more effort. It fit fine. I think the difference was the lack of a beveled edge at the beginning of the threads on the new one, which made lining up the threads to start more critical, and I was originally worried to crossthread something. So, problem solved and I now have a pretty, new, FUNCTIONAL oil pressure guage!! Thanks all, and apologies to Steiners for any implied criticism. I was mostly worried that I had the wrong item, not that it looked "bad".

When I get threaded items that have a flush not a lead in thread I usually create one by running a bevel on the end of the item on my disc sander. Do this all the time when I cut all-thread etc. If an end is boogered up, it can usually be fixed in the same manner.

Good lesson to learn...at least I hadn't returned them, resulting in having to pay shipping two more times to get the same thing right back!!!

I've bought several things from steiner... some good, some bad. They did, however, do their best to make it right on most of the things. The service is dependant on the person on the other end of the phone, so one may be helpful, and another a jerk... but you'll remember the jerk more than the helpful person.
