Farmall Cub

Hi everyone. Im new to this forum. I have owned a cub for a couple of years now. I bought this 1958 Farmall cub as a project but hadnt had time to work on it. I finally have time now and Im trying to get it running. The guy who I bought it from had a 12v battery hooked up to it. Cant that mess the whole system up if you run a 12v battery on a 6v system? If I did mess it up, I need some help on what to replace and what to rebuild because Im not real sure. any help is greatly appreciated.

You will need to check to see if the generator is 6 or 12 volt or been converted to 12 volts with an alternator.

A lot of Cubs have been converted to 12 volts with an alternator.

The 12 volt battery will not hurt the 6 volt starter.

Hello and welcome to the forum. This is a great place (great members too) to learn all about your Cub. Post some pictures and if you come up with some specific things you need help with - just ask. No such thing as a dumb question.

A 12V battery can't really hurt the 6V system on your Cub.

The starter should only be run momentarily, no more than 30 seconds at a time. It handles 12V just fine.

It won't hurt the generator. Odds are the generator wasn't working in the first place, which is why it has a 12V battery now.

6V lights will burn out on 12V, but they probably don't work either.

If the tractor has battery ignition, the coil may still be 6V. If so it needs a ballast resistor added, or it needs to be replaced with a 12V coil. This may already be done.

Are you having problems? If not, there's no reason to proactively "rebuild" anything.

The cub wont start.I Just had the starter rebuilt and when I put it back on, It started fine and ran okay 2 times

It might be a bit of a drive for you (not sure what you consider far) but bring it up to the house and we'll get her going and running good and have you back home by night. I got the cub to turn over, but it wont fire. I cant seem to find why it wont fire. it was the cables causing it not to turn over.us

What did you do about the cables? If that was the problem, check that all your connections are clean. It may be that the starter is taking all the available juice and there's not enough for the ignition system. Check the quality of your spark. If spark is bright blue, then check timing and that the plugs wires are installed for the correct firing order.

One of the best things you can do to familiarize yourself with your Cub even if you have some mechanical skills is to read the Owner's Manual. This one - McCormick Farmall Cub and International Cub Lo-Boy Operator's Manual 10-1-59 will suffice for your '58 Cub. You might want to check the Blue Ribbon Service Manual's as well.

Thanks you guys. I bought some new plugs and plug wires and will install them tommorow. I'll keep everyone updated.

I put the new plugs and wires on the cub. It still wasnt the problem.
