Bolster - I Did and I Didn't

I all - I'M SO HAPPY.

I DID get the machine screws out of the bolster - with left-handed drill bits.
I DIDN'T Drill too deeply.....

AMAZING - Until this forum - I never even knew there were left handed drill bits.

Ken, they are harder to find, but they also make ambidextrous drill bits. :lol:

Winning at the FCUB game is nice. The next bolster challenge is to drill a hole inside a 1/4-20 machine screw, lock that into an oversize hole in the bolster by the steering box, then tap it to 10 - 24. Can't drill it in the bolster - cause the steering box is in the way of drilling straight.

There is another trick to remove broken bolts and screws: I'm no master welder, but first you need to know if the screw is steel or brass, that determines what welding material to use. Now you guys with great welding experience can chime in anytime and correct me; but here comes the explanation: If you have a bolt with a snapped off head you can take a nut just a little size larger than the bolt, place the nut over it, and weld the nut and bolt together. It works in two ways, you are heating the area of the bolt you are trying to remove, and you are welding a new head onto the bolt. Now; if the screw is broken off in the hole you could drill a smaller hole into the screw, then insert a small size screw and weld the two together. Of course it depends it you have enough room to reach with your rod into the hole, a wire feed welder would make that easier.
I have seen this done and have done it with cast iron casting. If the screws are brass you would need to braze them together.
