Jack is a 1960 Cub LoBoy . Yesterday under heavy pull the clutch went "clunk" and quit working . New clutch was installed 50 hours ago by 1st rate tractor mechanic . Owner of repair shop is longtime tractor mechanic but business has grown so much that he has 4 or so mechanics employed full time and they don't see many Cubs anymore .
In last 15 hours of operation ,Clutch sometimes shuttered when clutching . Question : Is the clutch design such that the reach rod for clutching may have simply come loose. Other explanations.
Back to mechanic shop later today for repair .

Quit working as in tractor won't move in any gear or with engine running, can't shift gears?
Shuddering when pedal depressed - - clutch fingers not adjusted. Gotta do that even with a brand new pressure plate.

sounds like the throwout bearing may have failed. It is a graphite block, and if not prelubed and the fingers adjusted just right it will fail quickly.

Jack -the-Tractor is at mechanic's place . Will try to give you an update after repair.
When I retire --not likely --- I will start doing [maybe ] more of my own work.
Jack-the -Tractor is back from mechanic. New Clutch Bearing [pn 350921R11], new Clutch Disk [pn 3511773R91], new Pressure Plate [pn A-351760R91 -suitable substitute for Rockford] were installed. Fifty hours ago Clutch Bearing ,Clutch Disk [same part numbers ] and Pilot Bushing [pn 251266R1 ] were installed. Seems peculiar that Bearing and Disk would have failed in such short time.
Clutch , IMO , still not working properly . On release the clutch chatters . Mechanic says :
1. May be due to clutch needing to break in
2. When I questioned about need for adjusting fingers , he said "it came pre-adjusted . All we did was bolt it up ".
Thoughts ,please ? I need to get Jack back in operation . He is a working tractor .

you have to adjust the fingers, your mechanic is not much on cubs in my opinion. I bet it failed on account of not being adjusted the first time, demand to see the old parts I am sure they will not be available for you too see. Adjust the fingers or it will fail again

Definitely agree. Find another mechanic! He's stuck you twice. He owes you a PROPER clutch job.

the first thing is that the fingers were not adjusted correctly. second thing, in my opinion all after market pressure plates and throw out bearings are JUNK!! especially if they are of the original type graphite., I have replaced 5 aftermarket throw out bearings in the last 2 months. two were the bates bearing and the other 3 were graphite.

Can't embellish on it anymore than that....Except that he probably can't do a PROPER clutch job....What a rip-off...

Print off the clutch install & adjust procedure and take to shop owner. Demand that it be done correctly or refund your money!

Also, if you check out other posts, most new throwout bearings are poorly pre-lubricated, and should be soaked or at least liberally pregreased with CHEAP grease that will breakdown and soak into the graphite. Many previous posts on this, and very important. A lot of folks here actually have a spare TOB sitting in grease as a spare until it is needed. Good luck!

My thanks to all of you for your guidance and advice. Jack is back at mechanic's place for clutch adjustment .
Just a note of humor : If one has only one mechanic and the prospect of only getting one , as one would do with one's one and only wife , one will be slow in insulting him.
