The other question -- like the others said RED .. everything was RED . However and this is where it gets fun, if parts were replaced like the starter or the generator or the regulator they were Black. This would include the Mag Coil Cover and Spark Plug Cap.
The entire mag was masked off, at least in the early days of Cub production. If you look closely at ricky racer and wfmdfm's pictures you can see it has some sort of bag over it.
A LOT of stuff got shot red, even the gearshift knob. Like Dusti there are some things I prefer unpainted just because it looks better. Anyway, Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide listed the stuff that they masked off in the '39--'54 era. Basically if it was an electrical connection it was masked off. I can't remember if they left plug wires unpainted or not. If I can remember where my book is, I will check tonight.
