Farmall Cub

i have a coulpe stacks of disc's mounted on shafts i got out of the neighbors junk. i wan't to make a frame and attach it to the cub as a single gang. do i need to make a pivot so it will swing when i turn or should i make in on a hinge so it will go up and down when i raise and lower the rockshaft and just raise and lower it like a plow going in straight rows only? what do you guys think?

I would build a set of lift disks, as they would be the easiest to handle. I would build a ridgid frame, with a single row of disks, with two sections of disks wide, so the disks are angled in a V shape. Then mount the ridgid frame to the tractor (maybe directly to the drawbar) so it can be raised and lowered with the rear rockshaft and drawbar (unpinning the drawbar). This way you can pick it up at the end of rows, turn, then drop it back down.

Double gang discs will do more cutting with one pass, but you have to stop, reverse to straighten out the gangs, then you will still have the disks riding on the ground and leaving slice marks in your lawn. Lift disks may take more passes to do the same work as a double gang disk, but being able to raise them off the ground is a HUGE benefit.

here's what i have to work with

If the shafts are four foot or better wide make a mounting frame and mount them in a V shape one behind the other, one set facing right and the other facing left. This needs to be a pick up tool. Throws soil both ways in one pass. Disc for large tractors are made this way, but are on wheels.

Looks like you have about 1/2 of frame for one gang. Just my opinion. Cheaper to buy a complete disk harrow for a small tractor than to build the disk harrow out of the parts shown.

Been looking for Disc Harrow......Wouldn't the disc harrow have to be as wide or slightly wider than the tractor....Also The ones I've seen are quite expensive if thats the case....

You can get by with a disk harrow narrower than the tractor. Disk is hitched to tractor to cover one rear tire.

Throwing out a thought. Quite frequently implements for old 2 wheeled garden tractors can be found at auction or at the scrap metal dealer. I have a 2 wheeled garden tractor with plow and disk harrow for garden at son's house. The disk harrow is towed behind a Cub Cadet.

i like that off set idea, if they are wide enough. if not i found this set. looks simple to build from what i have.

This one is easily adaptable to the cub as a lift type.

Found a disc harrow you can order online thru " Home Depot" of all places.....Not the Brinley 189.00 job but a 209.00 outfit....Free shipping to your home and they will honor the VA discount, 10 %....Looks like a nice rig for a cub and you can easily fabricate 2 of them (actually it is set up to add a tandem)...So they should be easy enough to off set...I found them for a cub used on ebay but the shipping kills you....Anyway just some more info for you to chew on...Dave

made some progress on the discs, I had to break them both down and flip all the discs on the one shaft, and move the bearing to the outside but I got the big angle iron attached top of them. then I sort of copied the 23a harrow mounting arangment. I got it mocked up and tacked today and it don't look too bad. have any of you ever substituted a chain for the piece of strut I have on top? that way it could float up and down as I go. I am not real crazy about how the rock shaft puts down pressure on it when I lower it? what do you think?

The chain sounds like a good idea.

Guess, the thing to do is to try out the disk in your soil. See what happens.

A very nice project.

Watch when you turn the tractor while the disks are in the ground. It is hard to tell from the photos how far behind the tractor the disk is, but if they sway side to side much they could cut into the rear tires.
