Hello,
I have a Woods 59 mower with right hand threads on the spindle bolts, therefore I’m believe it’s a right hand discharge, which is what I thought I needed. I just installed new blades on it. However, the setup, which I purchased as a package, is such that it utilizes a 90 degree gearbox. My blades are now spinning the wrong way. I never realized the gearbox would do this. Can I somehow put the belt on differently to make the blades work right? Any and all advice would be much appreciated

Re: Woods 59 Mower with 90 Degree Gearbox
Hello Joe, Do you have the model of the mower and maybe some pictures? I had a rear mount deck for an old Ford tractor that uses a 90 deg. gear box and it was left hand discharge. I'm thinking that on the back of a Cub (opposite pto rotation from the Ford), I also presume it uses a pto drive shaft, it should be a right hand rotation/discharge with a 90 deg. gear box. I must be missing something.

Re: Woods 59 Mower with 90 Degree Gearbox
Hello Smokeycub,
Here are a few photos. My current plan to reverse the direction of the blades is to reverse the way I installed the belt. In other words instead of taking the belt around the middle pulley, on the bottom and going to the left side pulley, I’ll put the belt on the opposite side of the middle pulley and go to the right, and hope this works out.
ps The rear photo was taken before I painted the mower deck.

Try putting a twist in the main belt before the deck pulley

Hmm - that's interesting! That looks a bit like a deck for a lowboy/numbered cub with the cross member behind the deck. I had imagined you had a rear mount deck as well, obviously not . Anyhow it looks like you should be able to reverse the rotation of the deck with that mule drive set up by switching sides at the center pulley, the twist should go on the other side as well. Should be ok as long as it doesn't rub.
I think if you try this that round piece standing up by the center pulley will interfere with the belt. The entry and exit points on the center pulley will need to remain on the same sides, like in your pic. i.e. bottom groove to the left pulley, top groove to the right pulley. The difference will be between the mule drive and the center pulley. Let us know how it works out.Virginia Joe wrote:instead of taking the belt around the middle pulley, on the bottom and going to the left side pulley, I’ll put the belt on the opposite side of the middle pulley and go to the right

Re: Woods 59 Mower with 90 Degree Gearbox
that is a deck for a fast hitch cub.. they only thing you need to do is reverse the winding of the belt on the deck to get it to rotate the direction you want. I have done it many times. especially when i used a woods L-59 on a cub.

Re: Woods 59 Mower with 90 Degree Gearbox
looks like a woods fast hitch mower with a danco mule drive for a fast hitch with no fast hitch on the tractor some things look jerry rigged though as parts of the mule drive so you have parts for 2 different kinds of mowers suggest checking manuals looks like a mule drive for a 140 fast hitch the mower deck is a woods with attaching parts for a fast hitch cub

Re: Woods 59 Mower with 90 Degree Gearbox
Hello again and thanks for all the advice. The problem is fixed. I tried at first, putting a twist in the belt as Tim suggested above but didn’t like the way the belt rubbed against itself at the twist location. I ended up simply reversing the belt installation instructions as see in the photo below and it worked perfect. Thanks for everyone’s, input, it was much appreciated.

Glad that worked out for you. That's what you said you were going to try...and it worked. Did you have any trouble getting the belt through on the bottom groove? I thought maybe the belt wouldn't fit between the pulley and that vertical tube/guide by the center pulley. Nice looking tractor by the way!

Re: Woods 59 Mower with 90 Degree Gearbox
Comparing your deck to mine, I believe that that the belt is intended to run the way you have it routed now. I have a similar post on my Woods, which is routed the way you first had it, but it is on the other side. I believe it is to help keep the belt from jumping off the pulley. You will see that it only extends as high as the bottom groove.
