Got the '61 Cub Running Today!!! - Updated

Postby ricky racer » Sat Aug 17, 2013 9:01 pm

If you recall, I picked up a '61 Cub on July 4th. The Cub hadn't run in 4 years. I started working on it shortly after I got it home but didn't have much time to mess with it. Before I installed a new battery, I pulled all the spark plugs and shot a little oil in each cylinder to get some lube on the cylinder walls. I also primed the oil pump.

While I had all the plugs out I wanted to check for spark. Cranking it over I found none. Checked voltage to the coil and it was good. Checked the points and found they looked really bad and the gap was about .043" instead of the .020" called for in the manual. I cleaned the points and adjusted them to the recommended gap. Checked voltage to the points and it was good. Cranked it over, no spark.

Today I finally got new points and condenser at NAPA and installed them. Cranked it over and got spark. :{_}: Next I pulled the plug on the bottom of the carb to check fuel flow. None. The shut off valve on the sediment bowl turned pretty hard so I figured it was gunked up. Pulled sediment bowl and sure enough it was plugged up. Cleaned it out and reinstalled it on the tank. Added new gas. The tank will probably have to come off at some point to clean the rust out of it but it's not too bad.

Cranked it over and she slowly sprang to life. The governor is sticking and the engine has no throttle response. We'll fix that later. However, it runs and carries good oil pressure. The hydraulics did not work because the fluid level was to low. I drained the old fluid and added new Hytran fluid and now it works like it should. I still haven't got to drive it to see how everything else is working because it has now got something blocking the fuel so that needs to be addressed but I ran out of time today.

So all in all, a good day.

Pulled the main jet out and cleaned it. I reinstalled the jet and the Cub started right up. I cycled the Touch Control lever a few times and go the air out of the system. It's working smoothly now. It was time to finally take it out for a spin and see how everything works. I pressed in the clutch and tried to put it in gear but the gears were grinding so I figured the clutch was stuck to the flywheel. I shut the tractor off and slipped it into 2nd gear. I made sure that everything was out of the way and pulled the starter. She started up and lurched out the barn door. I depressed the clutch and it just kept going. With the clutch depressed I stepped on the brakes. She bogged down but didn't break free. I tried it again, the third time was the charm. The clutch popped free and now works like a charm.

The throttle linkage is still stuck with the Governor Speed Change Lever hanging up on the Lever Shaft. It would be nice to have more than just a few minutes at a time to work in this Cub.

Well, I got a chance to work on the '61 again today. To free up the arm on the governor I thought I'd have to pull the governor off because the arm will not come off the shaft it pivots on with the governor in place. I pulled the hood and generator off to gain access to the governor but was able to work the arm with a wrench and pry bar. Plenty of Kroil and WD-40 loosened it up. I pulled the cotter pin keeping it in place on the shaft and was able to tap it off the shaft about 3/8" and get some oil on the shaft. after messing with it for about 15 minutes I got it working real good.

While I had to hood off, I figured "might as well replace the spark plugs". It had 3 Champion D16's and one AC C87. I replaced all the plugs with AC C87's (I don't care for Champions). Oiled the generator too and replaced the hood. The thing runs like a top now. I still have issues with debris in the fuel system that keep plugging the main jet. I'm going to take the carb apart and clean it out and probably clean out the gas tank. This going to be a nice tractor.
