left rear final drive noise

Hi All,

No sooner did I get one issue fixed that another arose. My left final drive has started making a gear on gear noise, almost like one is bent happens once per rotation. Over a bump it sounds like something might be slipping around in there, either the wheel drive shaft or something internal. I checked my lugs to be sure they were tight and tried driving it again with the same result. Is there a common point of failure I should concentrate on? It makes the noise the most when it is in 3rd.

Appreciate any advice,

If it appears to originate in the final drive, I would check the break drum and the brakes to make sure they are intact. After that I would drop the oil pan of the final gear housing to see if anything loose is in there. With the pan off you could also check the bull gear.

Did you check the bolts where the wheel center bolts to the rim?

I mentioned the same problem in another thread. I'm going to take the drive apart so while I have it torn down is there anything I should anticipate ordering ahead so I can diminish my downtime? Seals, pins, clips, etc.?

Most like problem is the one of the wheel bearings that has come apart, or about to and is trying to ride over itself. Doesn't take long for TM to deliver. You can make most of the gaskets but you should go ahead and put new gaskets on. As far as the parts, wait till you see which ones you need then give TM a call.

Thanks for responding, Randall. If you'd kindly point me to TM I would gladly give him all my business...be it great or small.

If you scroll to the bottom of any page and look in the centre of the page .. then to the immediate left you will find a direct link to TM Tractor. They are a forum sponsor and have been for many, many years. Tom and Lynn are an integral part of our Cub Family :D and super folks.

Well, sometimes its a good thing when you avoid the obvious and head straight into surgery. No, actually its not, but you learn a bit before you slap yourself upside the head.

Partially tore down my final, just checking for anything loose. Nothing there. No Play at all. Made me really hesitate to invest in bearings and started to make me nervous that something could be going on in the transmission. Consequently, I hopped back on the forum to dig around a bit and after reading a few posts it hit me like a lightning bolt! I had checked the bolts holding the wheel to the spindle for tightness (which they were) but I had not checked the bolts holding the center dish to the rim. One was slightly loose and one was very loose. I had removed them a few months back to sand the rust of and seal them and must have not done a very good job tightening things back up. :headbang . Momma would be proud.

Glad to know that you got it solved. It takes a really self confident guy to admit to something like that ... :applause: well done :big smile:

I've mentioned elsewhere i had a similar problem with my Cub...final drive noise. Yesterday I decided i was going to tackle it so I got the tractor jacked up, took off the tire with the wheel weight attached and removed a bearing cover. Then the little voice inside my head whispered to me "There ain't no way in hell I'm digging into that!". I put the tire back on a started making some phone calls to competent people.

Do I get any points for that?
