Rear Main Seal

I've read a number of times in this forum that when replacing the rear main seal you must have the retainer modified. My question is does this apply to all years for the C60 or just earlier years? I'm about to split a circa '67 lo-boy for the seal and clutch while I'm in there and trying to make a list of what I need before I start.
