I Need a new Starter

Postby chief » Sun Aug 25, 2013 2:04 pm

Well I have just about replaced or rebuilt everything on Old Smokie, except the 6 volt starter,
yep you guessed it, the starter bit the dust, so I'm looking for a new starter,
we have only one place in town that does starters and they are not good at it at all,
So my Question is where can I buy a new starter,
I know the price will be High but that is ok since I all ready have right at 5,000.00 in her,
I would even consider a good used starter if some one wants to part with one. Thanks Guy :thanx:

You can get them rebuilt for around $100 or less. Maybe the local shop isn't so bad. Todd

Several folks on this site rebuild starters and generators. You can advertise your desires in the for sale wanted section of this site.

My thought is to take a shot at it yourself. You may get by with a new set of brushes and bushing, bearing.

Checked a 2010 Valu-Bilt catalog. Guessing it will cost you around $400- for a new/rebuilt starter. My thought is, that if you don't want to try the rebuild yourself, find a shop in your area that does that type of work. Gonna be much cheaper than a new starter.

Agree with Todd.
I have an excuse. CRS.

There is a starter and generator shop in Oneonta NY does good work and doesn't put you in the poor house. I have had them do starters on a Low Boy and a power unit through the years.
Edit to add one was a complete rebuild only thing used was the frame and the oil caps and the gear.

Chief, are you sure the starter is bad enough to need replacing, have you verified the switch and checked brushes, as well as going over the battery connections? if you still need one check with Rterry he lives in Benton, Ar.

Ok, I’ll start from the top,
Todd: the local shop is bad, they were ok until the old guy in there retired.
Eugene: I’m good at a lot of things, but starters & generators is not one of them, LOL
Boss Hog: Yes Jerry Lea is big 127 lbs. and he loves to have his picture taken.
Jack: Thanks for the offer, I got a PM from PVF1799 Ken he gave me the name of a company ( Classic Generator ) in Texas and said they are good, http://www.classicgenerator.com/
I’m going to call them this morning and see what they can do for me.
beaconlight: Thanks for the info.
John: I had rebuilt the switch about a year ago and thought it was the switch
Again, so I bought a new one, still would not turn the engine over,
I took it off the tractor and hooked it up, it would turn but not very fast,
So I took it apart and it looks bad,
ArtN: Yes I have way to much in old smokie, I could never sell her for what I have in her
And I know what you mean about Woman,LOL
My Wife is not to hard on me about old smokie, But I wanted to buy a new Henry Rifle
The other day, and she talked me out of that idea,Woman They Just Don’t Understand.
Thiggy: I live in a subdivision also, I have just a little over an acre and I have two tractors
And five riding lawn mowers,
Well Thanks for all the help Guys

Chief, if you're not in a big hurry I will gladly take it apart and put new brushes and bushings in it and shine it all up for you, or if you do get another one, hang on to it and let me see if I can fix it. Not sure when I will be in Hot Springs.

I cannot understand why you are worrying about buying a starter, since you have to feed Jerry Lea anyway just get a harness for him and train him to pull the cub to start it.

the only time Jerry Lea gets a harness put on him is when he goes to the Vet, and he don't like that at all. LOL

Hi,
It's not too hard to clean up a Cub starter, and put in new bushings and brushes. If the brushes look worn down then that might be most of the problem. But the bushings could be loose too. They can also have electrical problems inside, not too common, that I've seen anyway. :)
