Cloth Covered Wire and original connectors

I've been searching online for cloth covered why - similar to the few remaining original wires on Rex '48. There are several suppliers that seem to have what I'm looking for.

1. Where do you recommend I get as close to original short pieces of wire to restore the connections that are NOT part of the wiring harness?

2. What type of connectors would have been used back in 48? Did they have crimp connectors then or was everything soldered at the connector ends?

Ken <I was on e-bay the other day and saw cloth covered wire sets in red and black, no boots at the plug end already made up for the cub. 40 bucks sticks in my mind..............John

Rhode Island Wiring Service is the place to go, you can get in touch with them at http://www.riwire.com They will have everything that you are looking for, and all the stuff that you did not know that you would need.

This is a photo of one of the original connectors, crimped and soldered. One section would crimp around the wire with the insulation still on it then the top section would be crimped and soldered in place, and then a rubber cover would be put over the crimped connections (long since rotted away). The actual wire that was used was not just bare copper either, the individual strands were electro-tinned to help fight/prevent corrosion.


This is an "old" style of terminal that was made by Packard Electric, and if anyone is making/reproducing these I have not been able to find them for a lot of years. I have needed them for different vehicles in the past, mostly G.M. using Delco electric systems, I have come across small lots of them at old car swap meets over the years, usually still in their original glass jars. Rhode Island Wire has good terminals but Restoration Supply Company has some that are closer, not exact but closer to the original. You can get in touch with them at RestorationStuff.com

You will not be disappointed with anything that you get from Rhode Island Wire, the quality and finish are top-notch.

To each his own, but I purchase my wire and asphalt loom from John Brillman. I use regular crimp-on terminals with black heat shrink sealer on the ends.

RI Wire are great folks to deal with (been there) and is a great source for odd connectors and wire. Brillman is also great to deal with and if I were you I would just get his whole 'kit'.

Anybody that uses crimp connectors is just asking for a hard to find problem when they least want to have any kind of problem!

I could build a wiring harness, but a lot can be said for soldered with heat shrink connectors on the right gauge and color wire. A&I or factory wiring harness is well worth the cost to me, but given the work you are putting into that Cub, Brillman is the way to go. Do it once and do it right is very true when it comes to wiring.

Ken, I have been following the progress of your family cub. One thing that I have noticed is that you are a stickler for being precise and original. So having said that, you need to do yourself a favor and order a complete wiring harness for your particular cub from John Brillman. It will be shipped to you complete with instructions. All wires are covered with original looking cloth, with proper terminals and encased, where applicable,in a cloth loom. My 47 cub has one that as far as I and others can tell, looks as if it came from the factory.

And maybe the best thing yet, John will personally answer the phone assuring you that the harness he recommends will be the correct one for your year cub.
