Long Time No see! well fellers the ole 64 Cub is Screwed! No parts an no Dough($) to Fix em!
Well lets see Fuel line still leaks,6 Volt running with a 12 Volt Coil! (Not Firing!) Very Smart Dad! ,Carb Floods out Fuel runs out the top of the Carb at the Manifold,an the ole PTO Seal still leaking Away! Oh an the Gear Oil looks like Vanilla Icing!
So my Feeling towards this little Guy! i just about wanna take it roll it in the Ditch an Bury the Thing! an be done with it!

Brendan, let me know which ditch you put it in.

None of those issues are very difficult or very expensive.

Get the coil replaced with a 6V coil. This will get your tractor running.
Ignore the carb for now. That's just a symptom of a no-start.
Ignore the PTO seal for now. It's just a little spilled milk (or icing).
Drain and refill the transmission with 80-90 weight gear oil. Only takes three and a half pints.

Not a big investment so far. PTO Seals are more time than money. The carb may not even need anything at all. Some gaskets can be made.

Are you sure it is a 12 volt coil? Many of them are marked 12 volt coil with external resistor. Those are actually 6 volt coils with the external resister dropping the operating voltage from 12 volts to 6 volts.

Brendan, it sounds like time for a Cub Mini-fest!!! Can you bring the cub to Chapel Hill where we could tackle these tasks one at a time? I am about to get my "new" '55 cub engine back from the machine shop, so I will start reassembly, at which time I will be converting it to 12v. You are welcome to the brand new 6v coil the PO had put in.

seems like none of that costs that much money to fix. if your really that hard up spend a couple bucks fix the major issues and sell the tractor. even in the worst of shape its still worth a grand if it runs and drives.

Thanks yall well thing is its not mine to sell! if it was heck yea id sell it but i have money to spent on it but its not my Tractor so im not gonna worry. my Father turned 2000$ down two months ago so i can tell it never gonna leave an yes i know its rare but its just a plain old Cub My dad thinks is a pile of Gold since i told him how Rare 64's are. all i wanted to do with em was fix it up a little an put a mower on it that idea flew right out the window! my dad don't listen to me for nothing an i know more about these tractor than him! the 140 we have the Oil has not been changed in 7 Years ever since it rolled in the yard he did not even know where the dang oil filter is an me i don't really have a use for nether one sorry to say. yes i enjoy both but i don't wanna waste my own money on something i don't have a freaking right to even touch that's kinda the reason iv gotten more in to Garden Tractor's Cheap an Easy on the Wallet even though iv not bought one yet! HaHa but anyway Boss id sell it to you if i could cause you could make em shine like a new penny! from the way he looks all i see is a 1000$ paper Weight! Huh? now i know what Al meant about that 49 Cub HaHa

Brendan, If you think garden tractors are cheap, you better think again. Sure if your talking about a box store MTD or similar, they are cheap,cheap, cheap. Don't get me wrong for what they are they aren't terrible, but you get what you pay for. If you invest in an older Cub Cadet or John Deere garden tractor (there are other good old machines as well) it is nothing to put $1000 dollars into fixing them up. But when your done you have a great little machine.

Yes, but plan on keeping it. You will never get the money back in selling it. Use it and enjoy it.

Well these two are the only GT's im interested in right now.

Boy you got that right Mark I admit that my JD L111 isn't that old .. I think it is 8 years old now. It is however a John Deere and not a Big Box Store deere Back then it cost me almost $3,500.00 +/- plus taxes. I just put a new mower deck on it .. by the time that was all said and done... add on another $1,100.00 and change to the purchase price as well as a pair of front tires (that lasted 6 months - made in China Carlisle's).

Brendan, those are 2 very nice JD's Lawn/Garden Tractors. Nicely done.

I have more invested in this Lawn Tractor that I have in Ellie Mae and Granny even with all the modifications. I surely would get your Dad to read the forum (with you if need be), try to get him interested and he will see what will happen with a little investment in the parts and POL's that are needed

It's not secret to most everyone on this forum, and probably to you as well, that I collect John Deere L&G tractors too. I currently have three, but have had as many as five. I've been into them for near 20 years, long before it became to be the "fashionable" thing that it is now. I'll likely be selling my '73 140H3, but I can tell you right now, they're simply not as cheap and easy to work on as the Cubs. Been there...done that. If you and your Dad and can't strike up some sort of agreement, then...well, you're an enterprising young man...by your own Cub, or if the L&G tractors are your thing, by one of them...just be prepared to spend money either way. it certainly sounds to me as if the '64 is in pretty decent shape and wouldn't take much money at all, if you and your Dad can work out the details. Best of luck to you which ever direction you decide.
