These are some simple easy to make tools that worked very well for cleaning the inside of the tie rods and front axles. Not elegant but they worked really well for me.

For tie rods, I made the bend shown so I could perforate the 120 grit emery paper. The paper I use for this purpose come on a roll and is commonly used for cleaning copper pipe when plumbing.
I pinch the emery paper, perforate it with the end of the wire then role some on until it just fits into the tie rod. I tighten in by winding the paper as it's going into the hole. If it didn't fit well, I just pulled it out and ripped an inch or so off. Put it into my Bosch 18v drill and the rust just came flying out.



For the adjustable axle - I used this heavy wire laying around the farm. I bent it like this so I just insert into the axle to let just the wire spin to scrape the large scale off. I then took my 2.5 inch wide adhesive back 80 - Grit paper wrapped it into the folds in the wire then spun it with the drill. All the fine scales and rust came out.

For this type of work i use a straight metal rod with a split cut in the end. Just lay the emery through the split and wind it up to near the needed diameter.
