Governor Issue

I just pick up a '53 Cub, it has been sitting for a while, did the usuals, fired it up and the governor goes to full throttle. The carburetor butterfly is free. The throttle lever moves the governor shaft but doesn't slow the engine RPM down. What should look for? Thanks

Did you remove the carburetor as a part of your prep for starting? I would first check to make sure that the throttle/governor linkage and the choke rod are not connected in reversed positions. The throttle/governor linkage connects at the top of the carb, next to the manifold.

Did you prime the oil pump?

Yes, I did remove the carburetor, you're probably correct, I'll recheck the linkage, this comong weekend. The oil pressure was at 40 PSI on the gauge when running. Thanks

A few months ago I had similar concerns and someone posted a step-by-step procedure for adjusting the governor linkage to the carburetor. At the time an ole back injury prevented me from pulling the hood and making the proper adjustments. Since that time I've purchased another cub and it, too, seems to need this adjustment because in order to get it to idle I have to lower the throttle control lever well below the normal position range and at full throttle the control lever is barely half way. If one of you men would be so kind as to post a link to this procedure again, I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you again, Papa. ( It is my sincere desire to attend a Cub fest in 2014. The best I can tell the North Florida Cub Fest below Thomasville/Bainbridge ,Georgia is the closet to me. As that date approaches I'll be seeking an invitation and asking for further directions, ie; Motels & Such. I won't be bringing anything to be worked on, but I want to participate and learn how to overhaul a cub from front-to-rear )

No invitation is necessary. The mere fact that it exists is your invitation. Check out the link below. When you get to that link, also check out the link below Roy's signature at the bottom.
