I believe from what you describe, the leak is coming from the transmission. You'll have to remove both finals and the axle extension on the right side to change the seals. The noise you hear could be the first/reverse slider or the idler gear, or both.

It's on the left side of the transmission. Holds 3.5 pints

Vern - If you want to attempt a temporary fix for both the noise issue (as long as it isn't grinding) and the leaks dump in some Lucas Transmission Fix. It's available at Walmart or most auto parts stores. It's a super gooey oil that will the reduce the leaks at the seals if they're not in the absolute roughest of shape. It also quieted my 1st and reverse quite a bit as well. There's nothing wrong with going with a thicker oil in the tranny. Just a note though - don't be disappointed if you put the oil in the transmisison and don't notice a difference right away. You have to drive the tractor to get the oils to mix properly as the Lucas product will settle to the bottom at first. Give it a go!
She thinks my tractor's sexy...
