'48 Cub rear light problem
Hi all. I've been working on my '48 Cub to update the wiring. I have the 6-volt cub with Magneto. I purchased a new wiring harness for it from Brillman. I also installed a new 4 position Cutout light switch, a new starter lever switch, new Magneto J4 coil cover, new 6-volt cutout, new spark plug wires, and a new 6-volt rear combo light assembly. I have everything wired up and the headlights are working but the rear light is not.
I wired the system as follows:
headlamps to the 4 position light switch (position #3)
taillamp to the light switch (position #2)
ammeter "-" terminal to light switch (position #1-fuse connector)
ammeter "-" terminal to relay (cutout) "Bat" connector
ammeter "+" terminal to starter
generator "F" to light switch
generator "A" to relay (cutout) "Gen"
ignition switch to magneto
I've attached photos too. There are two other wires that came in the Brillman wiring harness kit that I did not use. They are:
Light switch to ignition system (with battery ignition only)
Coil + to distributor (battery ignition only)
These were a little confusing to me, but I assumed that if I had a Magneto (even thought the tractor has a battery and it won't start if the battery is drained) then I did not use these wires. Is that correct?
Any ideas of why the brand new rear light with brand new wiring would not be working? Thanks for your help!

- A better view of the ammeter wiring. The light switch position one connection is behind the feed to the cutout BAT connector on the right ("-") side.

Re: '48 Cub rear light problem

Re: '48 Cub rear light problem
Well duh! I should have thought of that. But you'd think a brand new light would work. I disconnected one of the front lights that I know is working and connected the new tail light to it. Nothing. There is only one wire on the tail light so I ran a jumper from it to the battery. Nothing. I'll send it back and try to find another light. Thanks.

Re: '48 Cub rear light problem
Before you go to the trouble of sending it back, did you check the bulb to see if the filament is broken?
Where you are, right now, is of absolutly no use unless you are able to get away from it, FAST!

Yes the filament looks fine. Neither the white or red lamp are coming on.

Re: '48 Cub rear light problem
Check your voltage at the wire connection on the outside of the light reading between the and ground on the battery. If you have it there, then check to ground at the light mount. My guess is no ground. You can also check for continuity between the lamp socket and ground. I suspect a bad ground...

Re: '48 Cub rear light problem
Boy do I feel stupid. Before mounting the new light I wanted to test it out and make sure it worked and that the new wiring worked. Never occurred to me to ground the light. Just standing there with it in my hands, and scratching my head. Problem solved. I've got a lot to learn about this tractor, but I won't make that mistake again. Thanks all for your help!

Thanks for admitting that mistake, it's one many of us have done. And not to laugh at you, but with you, I have to admit that I got a good chuckle at your predicament. I needed that release just getting home from work. Thanks again for a humorous post, good luck with the Cub!

Same here. Don't use the tractors at night. Dismounted the lights, cut off the wires, placed the lights on the bench.SONNY wrote:I have fought lights on my cubs until I just gave up and said,--dont need them anyway!lol!!---not worth the hassle of getting/keeping them working!
I have an excuse. CRS.

From Brillman.com. The wiring harness and the spark plug wire set all have an original look to them.
