Farmall Cub

I have a 64 standard cub that I use to snow plow - last year the hydraulics fluid chamber started needing frequent top-offs in order to function properly
this year I had to top it off with at least a quart every time I used it... I did notice some fluid spots leaking under the tractor when I went to use it, but not that much fluid...

then I noticed that the fluid must be somehow draining into my oil, because my oil dipstick showed super high levels - THAT"S where it was apparently going

so - what do I do next, and how big a project do I have ahead of me??

Hydraulic fluid in the oil pan means that the shaft seal on your pump is leaking. You'll need to order a rebuild kit. I'd suggest TM Tractor (sponsor at the bottom of the page). You'll also want to change your oil as the TC fluid isn't a good engine lubricant. There are several rebuild posts in the "How to" Forum, and directions in the GSS-1411 Service Manaual that is under "manuals" in the toolbar above.

There is a single rebuild kit for the pump. If you had to rebuild the TC block, you'd need to check the part # as there are two versions of it.

sorry to sound like an idiot but...

all I see on the TM tractor parts site under Hydraulics is-
a "Pump gasket Kit" , two "cylinder block gasket kits" depending on your cylinder block serial number and then a bunch of individual items....

is one of the gasket kits what you are referring to when rebuild kit for the pump, or am I missing something on their site?

Scott, order the Kit from TM tractor and it will come with everything you'll need to rebuild the pump. It's not really a complex job. Just remember to clean and lubricate every thing before re-assy.

You need a pump gasket kit (HY288), not one of the two different cylinder block gasket sets. However, early pumps need an additional seal that is not in the pump kit. It is unlikely that you will need the seal as later pumps used an o-ring that is in the kit.

Look at the instructions TM has posted on the page with HY288. In the illustration you can see the seal referenced as 13A, vs. o-ring 13. Those same instructions tell you how to identify which you have (in case someone replaced your pump with an early one). If you can't find the markings on your pump, you will know if you need the seal as soon as you take the pump apart.

Not a tough project at all. Just make sure that you lay everything out just as you disassemble it so that you know the orientation of the spring and the small rubber plug when it goes back together. Also, keep everything CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN when you are working with hydraulics...

Have ordered the pump gasket kit... and will be careful taking the pump apart to see the correct orientation of all the pieces
btw what is the best way to clean all the parts ?

also, my main hydraulic unit does leak a bit.. I think near where the piston sticks out of the front of it is there a rebuild kit for that?

Hi Scott.... Yes, there is a rebuild kit available for the Touch Control Block on TM's website. It depends on the serial number of the block because there are two different kits available due to different styles of TC block. Since the leak seems to be around the main piston, it would be good to rebuild the whole thing since all of the o-rings inside are of the same vintage. Again, CLEAN is the name of the game on this. One small piece of dirt will cause myriad problems on a fresh rebuild...the orifices are very small inside the TC system!

Best to take the TC off and clean it thoroughly while it is still closed up. Then clean your work area and put down some lint-free cloth or other barrier. When opening your block, take lots of pictures so you can remember how everything went together and how it goes back in place. Clean clean clean is the name of the game again here.

Now would be a good time to do the TC block since you are already tearing that system apart to do the pump.

You may not need to completely rebuild the Touch Control block. Clean everything around the T/C and check to see where the leak is actually coming from. It is very common for the control valve o-ring to be leaking. The control valve is what the rod from the lever hooks to on the T/C. Fixing that o-ring is much easier than doing a complete rebuild.
