For the benefit of us unknowledgeable folks, can someone specify a particular part number or better description for a "GM 1-wire" so that I would know what to buy.....

Would prefer Delco to be more like original. Mostly want it to work well and be trouble free. Don't larger units take more power to turn? The bus I used to drive had a dual voltage Delco alternator that was about the size of a small basketball.

Only had the generator off the tractor once in 50 years! Problem was not gen. Then. Bad ground on VR was the problem. When this one quits I may go 12V.

I do have two of the referenced Hitachi alternators on the shelf, bought at a wrecking yard. One is good and the other tested bad. The bad one will be a core for return if ever needed. Also have two of the even-smaller Denso units on the shelf, both new. But have not yet installed either type on a tractor. The only ones I have installed are the Delco, in both 3-wire and 0ne-wire hookups. Of the ones I have used, the 3-wire will start charging at lower engine speeds. Once they are charging, either one charges some so long as the engine is running, even at idle.

Bus Driver, as I have said the Alternator that I use is a one wire and it charges at very low RPM they will charge a idle speed
no need to rev it up.

Don't know about the Hitachi but the Delco alternators are easy to work on (whether one or three wire), reliable, easy to find, and very reasonable $$ especially at the boneyard. FWIW I'm still running a generator on the Cub and have no charging issues. Just gotta keep a close eye on the battery electrolyte/water level.
