So, I have my cub on blocks, since I took the rear wheels to get sandblasted yesterday. I decided to start it so it could run a while yesterday, and while it was running I decided to make sure all the gears and the PTO worked correctly since I put everything back together. When It was in first and reverse it was fine, but second and third sounded like I was crushing gravel inside the transmission. I know these transmission are known for noise, but this sounded a little more serious than just noise. I plan to get a video of it tonight and put up here for some expert advise as to what I should do, if anything at this point.
I read an older post last night where someone recommended the input shaft bearings be replaced. I'm wondering if that's what I need to do.
Either that or a countershaft bearing. Both 3rd and 2nd gears are to the front, so I would suspect one of the front bearings. If you have your cub on blocks, there should have been no real load during your test and I would guess it will be obvious which bearing is bad once you have it apart.
There is no load on it at all. It's off the floor and the wheels are not on it. So it's basically just rotating the axles.

Take the cover off and start looking. I can't imagine that much noise with no load unless there are some broken teeth on one or more gears. Inspect the gears on both the top and bottom shafts.
Turn it by hand. You're looking for missing/chipped teeth on the gear set. If I was doing it, I would drain the transmission. Good lighting is a real plus and possibly an inspection mirror. Speed is not important but looking very thoroughly is.

Well I took the shifter plate off and rolled the axles around tonight. It looks like the teeth on the two lowest gears in the transmission have 3-4 teeth on them that are eaten up with rust. I figure this is the part of the gears that was on the bottom of transmission when it was sitting in the field I found it in. My question now is what if I leave it this way until I have time to rebuild the transmission? Can it mess up anything else?
My 2 cents is sure it could do more damage, but will it don't think anyone could say for sure, if the rust on the gears that you see is all that's wrong with it I would not be afraid to run it if it was mine.
With that said if theres other problems that you cant see like a bad bearing or cracked tooth it could break or come apart and tare up more
if you have rust on the bottom gears it is a good possibility there is rust in the rear pinion bearing. this will make the clearences way off. If used much can ruin ring and pinion gears.

Is there a place to buy a new gear set and bearings for a complete rebuild? I didn't see anything like that on TM or Steiner. If I am going to go tot he trouble of rebuilding this transmission, I am going to do it with new parts so it will last my lifetime.
I was trying to buy a complete tranny on Ebay but the guy wont deal. He wants $120 plus a $25 packaging fee plus freight. I offered him $120 free freight and $90 plus freight he declined both offers. Maybe it's worth more than I'm thinking it is. I just figure I bought a whole cub with mower for $500, so $120 for just the transmission sounded fair. Also, the transmission looks partially disassembled. It looks like all the parts are there though. What is a good price to offer for a transmission?
A good trans will run $100.00 to $125.00 plus shipping. Some times you can find them for less from a member and have it Cub Expressed for next to nothing.
I listened to the video a couple times, it sounds like at least one bad bearing to me. Not easy to tell for sure but my guess would be a counter shaft bearing.
