Tranmission question

If I were to buy a transmission in this condition:







Would I be able to install it with basic mechanical knowledge and basic tools? It looks like the transmission is basically all together with the exception of the top shaft. I am not sure how that shaft installs into the transmission. The bottom row of gears in my transmission are half eaten by rust. The previous owner left this cub sitting outside for an unknown amount of time with the gear box full of water. Now when the tractor is in gear it makes an awful noise. I'm thinking if this would be a fairly easy, and straight forward install, it would be my best option to finish up my cub.

Jason, If the tranny case is okay, you might want to look for a set of Cub Cadet gears. One of the CC guys can point you to someone who parts out CC's. They usually have little gear wear since they were mainly used for mowing. Maybe put that question on the CC forum or in the classifieds.

Jason, I would want to see that one in person,and find out why it is like that. It does not have to be torn down that far to remove the top shaft, so other parts may have been getting swapped out.

I agree with Eugene and Bob. That tranny was taken out and partially dismantled for a reason. It may be good, but then again, it could have chipped gear teeth, or the shift forks could be cracked. Very hard to tell from the pic.

Now with that said, if you can look at it and see that all looks good and the price is right, then go for it.

The location is too far away for me to visually inspect. I figured since my transmission is ok other than the lower gears being eaten up with rust, I could piece the top end together between the two if anything was missing.

Are there any benefits to using cub cadet gears over the original gears?

Be careful mixing gears. I do not know just when, but there was a change in the 2nd gear ratio and the 2 different ratios have to have both gears changed together. I think the Cadet also has the different ratio.
